To me, it's all about respect and deserving it. If you don't show it, you don't deserve it.
Respect is earned, not conferred by right. I don't go around burning the flag or whatever, but I don't respect our country or our flag because it's done a lot of things in the past half-century that have lost that respect from me. When America as a nation starts behaving in a way deserving of respect, I shall gladly give it.
I can see what your saying and I won't press you to like America. But you do need to realize that we done many great things to get where we are today. Maybe we're not doing great things today, but there is no reason to think we won't get better. But I think (this is my opinion) one of the problems with the country is that people don't respect it like they used to. When you care for something, you take care of it it any way you can. You care about your house, you mow the lawn. And you can always tell if someone doesn't because they let weeds grow and there house because dirty and trashed. So what I'm saying is that if you don't like it for what it is. Make an effort to correct it. Then maybe you can respect your country.
Yeah, but we did a lot of awful things to get where we are today too. We murdered countless natives, we used slave labor, etc, etc. My point is simply that I am ambivalent towards a nation that I didn't choose to live in and distainful of our corrupt, sociopathic government, and I wish more people wouldn't demand that I respect the symbols of said government when it's done nothing to earn that respect.

I don't mind if people disrespect my country's flag. (I'm Scottish)

But I am quite patriotic though. I like to see everyone with the Saltire painted on their face singing flower of Scotland. It's nice to see everyone unite, especially when we are against England and we kick them up the bahookie. I like the history behind the Saltire and the Lion Rampant.

I don't particularly enjoy watching footage of a horde of shouting middle eastern men burn my nation's flag. But then again I don't give a shit about the Union flag, however the St George Cross I do. I honestly don't care if Scotland leaves, fuck 'em. Or Northern Ireland, more trouble than it's worth. I do like plucky Wales, but I do hate it when I go to Wales and they insist on speaking their silly dead language with no vowels. I do consider myself English and not British, just as a Scot would most likely vehemently deny being British like Andy Murray does.

I guess it comes down to the wonderful history my country had sitting at the throne of the world for a hundred or so years. I am proud to be English and I wouldn't like to live anywhere else.

Err... no. And I'd probably cringe if I saw someone with the England (or Union *whatever it is when its not at sea) flag waving around outside their house.

He doesn't, that's just something else people like to moan at him for, along with him not being "chatty enough" and being "too moody". And there I was, thinking he was supposed to be playing tennis.

Don't really care what happens to my country's flag. It's just a flag. But then we don't have to pledge alleigance to our flag every morning in school or sit through our national anthem at every sporting event. Americans and the French tie for the most patriotic peoples, noone else particularly cares unless it's a major internaitional sporting event and their country wins. I dno't care for patriotism, nationalism or any such stuff.

Oh and Canadians and New Zealanders are the most easily offended for being asked "Are you american/australian?" because of the similarities in the accents.

Anyone who would be offended by a flag being disrespected scares the crap out of me. That kind of blind fanaticism and xenophobia can do nothing but evil.

I'm English and if someone was disrespecting the Union Jack or George's Cross to be a dick I'd treat them as any other dick, whether a flag's involved or not.
Just because I get annoyed when someone disrespects the American flag does not mean that I'm a fanatic or xenophobe. I know that America is far from perfect (so is every other country in existence) and I readily admit that.
And I don't hate other countries or the people of that country in general. I tend to reserve any hatred I might feel for individuals or groups/societies that I have personal experience with (Juggalos for example).

Finally, I'd be just as annoyed if I saw a foreign National flag being disrespected, either intentionally or unintentionally.

You don't have to love my flag, but I interpret the burning of an American flag as:

"F*ck every American! Even the ones I've never met who are probably very nice people!"

Every single country has done something wrong. Just about every country and culture has killed, enslaved and harmed others. We are a very young and recent nation. We didn't have time to do things slowly if we wanted to stay caught up with the others. We had to make every decision quickly and that means our mistakes happened more often. Compared to other Countries we are like a teenager stuck in power while all the other older and (Honestly) less powerful countries look down on us saying we have little experience and knowledge (which may be true) of what the world needs.
Which is why nationalism is awful. I prefer the idea of either a unified world government or small city-states. the nation-state is an awful, awful concept.

I would disagree with many of the opinions I've seen here, that the flag of a nation does not in anyway symbolise the heart of the nation. I will use Canada as an example. The nation consists of it's people, all of whom disagree on many different things, have many different opinions, and are separated by differences and prejudices based on being from different cities or provinces, their upbringing, their religions, their beliefs. With 35 million different people, there are 35 million opinions, feelings, and worldviews which are extremely different and diverse.

However, when the Maple Leaf is flying, when O Canada is being sung, there is only one opinion, one feeling, and that is of love for not just Canada, but for each other. To remind us that though we are all different as individuals, we are all the same as Canadians, and are never truly alone. The flag, national anthem, these are widely recognised symbols which most of us agree on and are united by. That's why the flag is so important, it isn't about a piece of cloth. It's about the collective love for one another being represented by something physical we can all see and touch. It represents everything we have accomplished, and everything every Canadian loves about Canada. It is the physical manifestation of the nation. And remember, the nation is not a place on a map, it is a unity among people, a shared project, a shared vessel for our dreams and worldviews and opinions. All 35 million people, and those who respect Canada's vision of multiculturalism, of peacekeeping, of diplomacy, of respecting and helping others, the physical manifestation of that is a piece of cloth you can get for 5$. But it is not a rag.

Nope. It's a piece of cloth. It was probably made in a factory along with the other thousand that were shipped out that day. If they're old or handmade, then yes, it's annoying to see mistreatment of someone's hard work or a historical artifact, but no more so than if someone were to chip a hundred-year-old vase or spill coffee on a painting. Flags aren't special. They're just a symbol, and one that is frequently misinterpreted.

Well, I don't agree with you there (I'm paranoid of a world government). I kinda wish we as a nation were older. We don't have any unique stories or style. What we are is what we have have been saying for a long long time and that is that all nationalities are welcome here. Since we're so new, we don't really have any fairy tales or lessons. England has those Grim Tales and Russia has interesting tales to (Like this one about a phoenix being caged by one of three princes and got his horse killed by a wolf, then the wolf felt bad and let himself be the princes new badass ride) or the those crazy Greek and Norwegian mythological tales. Sometimes it feel like my nation just wants an identity to carry around the world.
I'm paranoid about any large government, but a unified world government would be better than what we have now.

Anyhow, America has plenty of folk tales and such. And we have an identity already: swaggering cowboy. I was under the impression we pretty much embraced that one.

If I see one with holes in it or a rip I don't care, but if I see someone ripping the flag on purpose then it bothers me because of the message they are trying to portray.

Not at all its a peice of cloth with a drawing on it.I am pretty patriotic but if all the flags of my country were destoryed it still would not bother me as it would not change the nationality of my blood in my veins.

People actually setting fire or ripping the flag yes we get it you do not like our country if you have such a problem with it leave us alone.
