Personally i think the amount of threads about Feminism on off-topic is getting a bit mad, but what's just struck me is i can't remember the last time (if ever) that i've debated or discussed feminism IRL with friends and family.

Intellectually speaking, i've debated politics, the arts, history and societal issues many times with the people i've known over the years but never feminism itself so much. Yet, whenever i go to off-topic it's flooded with threads about Feminism and it strikes me as odd that the debate on off-topic in this regard is so different to that of my friends who are in many ways typical Escapists. So really i want your thoughts on these questions:

1) Is the interest in Feminism just an Escapist thing?

2) Is the interest in Feminism an internet/nerdy cultural thing?

3) Is the interest in Feminism a North American thing? (I'm coming from a British European perspective)

And before anyone points it out- yes i am well aware and appreciate the irony in my OP.

I have never talked abouut feminism, both on the Escapist and outside it.

I only talk about things that I deem interesting to talk about...and feminism isn't one.

We rotate controversial topics regularly over the course of a year.
Feminism is the topic of the month, which has lasted longer than a month.

I only talk about it IRL when the need comes up.

I talk about it if it comes up, but I don't go out of my way to talk about it.
I've been avoiding those threads recently, because I know if I go in I will see someone saying something really dumb and just get irritated and it all goes nowhere.

I'm not sure why it comes up so much, I think many people perhaps don't realise that feminism isn't a big hivemind. And I think a lot of people haven't really met that many feminists IRL.
Eh, whatever reason, I do wish the next person who feels tempted to make a thread about it just... doesn't.

I have if it comes up in a conversation, but it doesn't come up often.

I've only become particularly interested in feminism over the last couple of years, since taking a body and identity module at uni and learning more about gender roles.

I actually don't discuss it that much because I feel like I don't know enough about all the facts. Sometimes I'll present something I think is solid enough, although there's always someone who'll say what I say is stupid. Generally I'm rubbish with arguments because I'm a weak willed female person and lose faith in myself (I'm trying to get more confident, it gets easier with age I guess).

I prefer to observe other people's arguments, soak it all up like a sponge as it were. I'm going to be doing a uni project this year about sexual anxiety, I think feminist theory, gender roles, etc. is going to be a big part of it. For these reasons, I don't mind these gender threads, you guys are just giving me material! :D

Seeing as I don't talk about it online, (here or on any other forum) I'd say no, seeing as for the most part I think people who babble on and on about the same thing should just feed their face into a mulcher and be done with it.

I talk about it when it comes up in real life, which is currently far less often than it does here. There was a brief stint in real life when it was all day every day, that got really bloody dull.

I only talk about this stuff on the Escapist and with friends when we are drinking, gathering to smoke some cigars or mo'assel from the hookah. The Escapist is very... fond of these topics I guess.

It's not a topic that comes up much in real life no.

Which is probably good because most of the women I know in real life are the kind who would give feminists a bad name. Either from having views that strongly go against it, or being the kind who'd claim "I want equal rights but..."

The irony being of course you've started yet another thread on this over-worked topic and -

Fine, if you're going to be like that and take my chance away to act all smug... :(

I find them all confusing as its generally people all agreeing with each other but trying to make it look like they agree more, a kind of "Im so feminist it hurts!" attitude. Whenever I see people arguing/discussing it on here, it just reminds me of that episode of South Park where all the men are pretending to be shocked when other men have affairs while casting sidelong glances at the women in the room.

In real life though its rarely mentioned. Its just not a thing in the circle of friends and company that I keep.

Fairly often. My favourite topics of conversation are history, politics and current affairs so I do invariably end up discussing feminism. I also happen to be surrounded by a surprising amount of sexist individuals.

I spend a lot of time wandering through feminism and social justice websites, but it's not something that comes up that often IRL, beyond which politicians I support and that sort of thing.
