I think it's mostly due to the fact that gamers are trying to distance themselves for the stereotype of anti-social misogynist, and then some asshats like that e-sports team harass their girl team mate, or some people harass and threaten the Bioware writer, or more recently some people harass that feminist lady who wanted to do that youtube series.

It's only a hot topic because stuff like that keeps showing up in the news room.

Yeah, there's a lot of that going round, every time people want to say that gaming has finally grown up, something like that happens as if to prove them wrong.

It's a sensitive topic that concerns everyone.
It stands to reason that people will have an easier time discussing it behind anonymity.

Sure it comes up. Usually because we'll see someone stupid like a girl flipping her shit because a guy asked her for her number in a bar. Or a bloke loudly exclaiming that its totally sexist that he has to pay for a meal first.

Basically, if it gets brought up, its because people are being stupid.

Never comes up, thank god. I despise any conversation regarding any kind of politics though so if it did I'd probably just walk away anyway.

im a very outspoken feminist and activist so i talk about feminism much more in real life than i do on here. i mean really i dont see much point in debating it here. people come here to talk about video games, not social issues. trying to get people to open their minds to other perspectives by forcing them into a conversation they dont want to have is just a miserable experience for all involved. feminist debates are best saved for people who want to debate the issue of feminism. the "debates" that show up on this site amount to little more than each side beating their heads against each other until one person wears the other person out

It's cyclical. I currently theorise that you could probably chart it but I haven't bothered yet. Basically The Escapist has a cycle, each phase of indeterminate length until someone kicks off the next one. It's a side effect of people wanting views and posts in their threads (possibly for badges?)

People see popular thread subjects and think "Hmm if I change one word here in the title I change the specific issue being discussed and so rake in all those same posters".

Then towards the end of a phase's life we get "Why all the X threads?" "Stop with all the X threads" "Anyone else really fed up of X threads?"

If I recall correctly October last year the hot topics were bestiality and necrophilia or Twilight as it's colloquially known by it's fans (nah, that joke is too easy these days) so I'm quite happy with feminism being the current topic de jour to ignore and hope it stays around a bit longer.

Congrats on being part of the cycle.

Edit: If actually you want it to stop you have to find a new topic that people will post on a lot and make a few threads about it over a few days and hope people copycat you. Alternatively get a small group together and all post on the same topic.

Prepare for whatever it is to be discussed to death over the course of several months though.

I've got one thing to mention about feminism. I believe Women are entitled to equal an chance at success or failure. I'd like to make a point that I don't believe this means that we need a workforce that's exactly 50% of both genders. The idea that usually gets confused with feminism, the "go back to the 1950's only have women in charge instead of men" is a flawed paradigm, and although funny, isn't helpful to the idea of letting a woman have an equal opportunity at success. Or failure.

I do if people bring it up, sort of like here on the Escapist. I never start conversations about feminism, but I'll happily join in.

We actually do talk about it quite a bit in my family, because we talk about politics all the time. Last time I was with my dad we spent about forty five minutes talking about the right to a free press. Not because there was a news story or an inciting incident, just because it was Friday and we were together talking.

It's because gamers like to rage about how feminists are trying to destroy games, it's a common topic in any sort of nerd culture venue.

Maybe people are talking about it because there's an issue? Just gonna throw that one out there...

All this snide jives of "oh it's just this month's hot topic" annoys me no end. If people are talking about it, it's because it's important. Maybe instead of trying to be clever and cool you could try and contribute to the discussion?

If it comes up in a conversation, then yes. Exactly the same as Art or History or Politics or current events.

Yeah I talk about it a bit outside our fine site. One of my best friends is the one who pretty much turned me into a feminist so me and her end up discussing it a lot. Especially in terms of nerd culture. Oh the hours we've spent, sometimes drunk, discussing Catwoman. Good times, good times.

Only on the rare occasion someone else brings it up, and then (just like on here), I'm the first person to point out that discrimination against men is an equally large and important problem that doesn't get a tenth of the attention that discrimination against women gets. But I suppose there are a million other topics to discuss that particular issue in.

I tend to talk about feminism a good deal. I like to discuss international political theory, and feminist theory is an important part of that conversation. I also discuss videogame narrative quite a bit, like most escapists, and I think feminist theory could make for interesting narratives. There is a lack of understanding when it comes to feminism, and I used to think feminist theory in most fields was pointless, but like many things, my younger stupider self was wrong.
