Do you hate something because its popular?

so another one on my ever growing list of [b/]bullshit people say[/b] is "people only hate it because its popular!"

now think about this one for a second...do you hate things just because they are popular? I mean really?

I think the answer is kind of "yes and no"...I think the thing in question has to be bad in the first place, its populaity is what makes it worse and bring in hate..for example

50 Shades of grey- is a terrible terible book in anyway you can imagine, this becomes even moreannyoing when it sells so much and everyone and your mum is reading it...so

the transformer movies- yes alot of peole hate them...and I'd still hate them regardless of how popular they are,

COD- I can't exactly say COD is a bad game...but its reputation and everything surrounding it...its kind of hard not to hate it

It depends on the demographic that whatever it is, is popular with. For example, Twilight is popular with teenage girls, so while I may not outright hate it, I am sure as hell not going to read it. Same with something like 50 Shades, I've heard it described as "mummy porn" (not Egyptian style, although that may make it more interesting), and that definitely isn't my thing so I'm not going to read that any time soon. Perhaps hate is a strong word for it though, complete ignorance of it might fit better for me.

I won't hate something because it's popular, but I'll certainly despise how popular something is.

Take 50 Shades of Grey. It's tripe. Complete literary tripe. It's poorly written and reinforces ignorance about the BDSM community.

There's plenty of smut on the internet just as good.

There are some things that I dislike based on my own experience with them. Then I hear a whole lot of people praise that thing and for some reason this turns my dislike into irrational hate.

The game Witcher 2 is probably my best example.

yeah, this is prety much my experience with skyrim (and Borderlands to a less extent) its worse because I want to like thease things but I can't

I like enough popular things to make me "hating something for being popular" seem unlikely; I'll certainly dislike that something is popular if I truly think a thing is bad, but I'll have reasons for disliking the thing other than it's popularity.

There are things that you would objectively hate in all circumstances but that are brought to your attention only due to their popularity, and then there are things that become popular to a degree that their mere ubiquity infuriates you. Skrillex fits both of these descriptions for me.
