Im about to go to work and thought I'd make this thread before i go.

I imagine that a lot of you work with the public. I work for Hel-mart *cough* I mean Wal-mart.

When you go shopping do you respect the people and place that you do your shopping at? When you pick stuff up do just throw it down on the floor if you don't want it? When you want something off hooks do you do your best to rip it off in a way to damage the packaging so that it can't be put back up? When you walk in, you pass dozens of carts and then get angry, stand by the cart bin and snarl at any worker who goes out to get carts? Will you stop and talk to people in the middle of an aisle and block the path so neither customer nor sales associate may pass?

Im just wondering how a lot of the people on the escapist act when they do their shopping.

often i grab stuff as i go, then get halfway through the store and go "wow a cart would've been helpful..." then often foolishly stagger in the direction of a cart to deposit my things in.

you'd think i'd learn but i do it nearly every week

I've worked in retail before and know what it's like, so I try and be as nice as I can towards retail employees.

I'm usually a nice guy when I shop. When I go and look for games, I'll chat with the dudes who run the local game shop about all types of bullshit. They are pretty cool.

As for shopping for like groceries and stuff...

I choose the Spanish option on the self-check out and when I can't find something on there I scream, "WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? I ONLY SPEAK AMERICAN!" I get a few dirty looks, but I got one of the attendants laughing pretty hard.

I do none of the things mentioned. At hell-mart, my typical behavior is to avoid all eye contact, move quickly, and otherwise get the hell out as fast as possible without antagonizing anyone. Can't stand the place, and can't stand most of the people there, customers and employees alike, no offense Crimson.

Respect? No. Nothing in the store or the people there rate high enough on my personal scale for me to actually respect them. However, I don't do those things because I am not a *****.

While I live in the wrong country to have ever even visited a Wal-Mart (unless the stores that Wal-Mart controls in Britain that aren't actually Wal-Marts count, but I don't think they do) generally at supermarkets I use the self check-out and avoid human contact.

So people who work in retail deserve no respect at all? Thats odd because i believe all people until they prove otherwise deserve atleast a small amount of respect or thats just how i treat people. common courtesy and all that stuff.

I've had some customers say the same for the credit card readers.

I agree with Aris Khandr. I don't respect any one who has not earned it first and existing and occupying a job is not enough to earn my respect, but I don't just go about making work for people just to be an ass. I treat people with common courtesy but that does not mean I respect them that means I'm not a giant dick.

I'm super nice to people that work in retail and pretty much any other customer service place. I typically read when I'm eating at a restaurant so I will put the book down if they are talking to me.

I knock something over? I pick it up and put it back to where it was and apologize if a worker saw me do it.

[sub][sub]R-E-S-P-E-C-T find out what it means to me...sorry....[/sub][/sub]

I used to work in a supermarket too... and I have now got some weird traits, like automatically putting dumped goods back on the right shelf, or if the stock is all nicely tidied and at the front of the shelf, I would take the products from the back...!

I would never just dump anything, or throw it on the floor though, even before I worked in the supermarket! That's just common god-damn curtosy...!

I do all that stuff because it doesn't take much extra effort to be civil. There is no reason to be a douche to employees in retail but at the same time, retail employees should take pride in their job. I used to work in retail and I know how frustrating it can be so I try to make sure to be nice while I am there. Retail/Customer service is a thankless job.

My biggest personal philosophy is "don't be a dick", so yeah, I usually tend to avoid being a dick when it's possible.

There's a special place in hell for people who pick something up, place it their cart, then later decide they don't want it anymore and just put it "back" on any random shelf instead of putting it back where they found it.

I generally try to be as nice as possible (please, thank you, all that good shit), double-check that I have the nexessary ammount of cash etc.

Though I do make a scene now and again if I'm with a particularly annoying person. But, if anything, I at least give the people a good show.
