Do you have unreasonable standards.

I have a friend that simply won't play anything retro because it's not 3D or complex or has a ground breaking story. With those standards, it made me think, how high are the standards of The Escapist.

My only standard is that a game has to be fun. I frickin play hangman on my phone while I wait in line at the grocery store.

I'm such a gaming whore. My standards are so low even Hermes couldn't limbo under them.

I'm a graphics whore, and have a lot of issues playing games with not up-to-date graphics.

I also can't really play a game that doesn't have a decent story, either.

Yes. I guess the more games you have played, the more spoiled you become. You wish all the good parts of all games could be somehow united in one game.

-Gameplay has to be smooth.
-The radar/waypoint/pathfinding stuff has to be near perfect.
-All player mistakes must be fixable or redeemable (no corrupting a 40 hour safegame with stupid choices).
-Perfect use of mouse (and joystick in case of flight). No bad ports please.
-Big gameworld with lots of variation. Not a lot of loading screens.

I am ok with the story and graphics being sub-par, but I pretty much demand perfect gameplay :)

Not at all, as long as the game is well designed and not completely infuriating then I'll play it.

Hell if I am that bored I'd even stoop as low as Bejewelled... ... ... STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT!

I still play games from 1990, so, no, I don't think my standards, with regard to graphics, are particularly high. Story, yeah, I can be a bit picky about, but if it's fun, it's fun, and that's all that really matters.

Oh, except for casual games, those just don't click with me for whatever reason.

Controls, gameplay, and storyline are the most important to me. Have gorgeous graphics is nice, but not the clincher when it comes to games. I still absolutely love the KOTOR games, and usually have a sit down with both installments at least once a year. Those two games, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 are the only games on my PC that I have installed on a constant basis because I find myself returning to them constantly. Also because I have so many gosh dern MODS that it would take FOREVER for me to find them all again and install them, modding can be a *****, especialy when you have certain ones that cancel each other out or have to be placed in certain folders individually..

Only when it comes to FPS. Such a generic genre deserves to be treated harshly.

Graphics in general aren't an issue for me. What does bother me is characters. If, for example, I'm in a dialogue and the other person is talking without moving their lips, staring at me unblinkingly and looping a generic animation, I have a problem. If the dialogue itself is contrived or ridiculously bland, I have a problem. I guess overall, I harp on unbelievable characters. A relatable character is nice, but not everyone has the same motivations and morals as I do, so asking for every one of them to be relatable is unrealistic. All I ask for is something believable.

If a game doesn't really place importance on other characters, it's just as well. In short, I like well-done characters. Not doing it at all can be a wiser alternative to half-assing it.

I suppose I have fairly high standards, but only in certain arenas: I absolutely require a story. If you've created an elaborate and complex multi-player title with 'jaw-droppingly awesome gameplay', you might as well have created "Pong" for all I'm going to care about it. Without a narrative framework to contextualize my actions, I see all games, from the simplest to the most ridiculously complicated, as mere pointless diversions (crap).

People who know me would probably call me out on this of course, as I've made it known that I do in fact dally with a couple of titles without stories, and indeed, they are not just story-less but also casual games. But it's not actually the contradiction one might think it is!

See, the only "casual" games I play are Audiosurf and Beathazard, and they share one very important distinction that differentiates them from the likes of Peggle, Bejeweled, Counterstrike, or Battlefield 1942 (in my mind you see those games all fit into the same category of "things I ignore because they're pointless") - both titles dynamically generate content based on music from your collection, which they play while you're playing the resultant "levels".

This transforms them from mere pointless diversions I would never bother with into an interactive means of listening to my awesome music, which I do quite often anyways - but now I can do that and win.

More then 8 hours of gameplay
Replayability, unless its insanely long like 40 hours or something though its still nice
A story that actually makes sense
Characters that are more intelligent then a dung beetle.
FUN

For 2010 the games that passed all these are

Red Dead Redeption
umm I cant seem to think of any others right now, mabey when I get off work and look at my games collection I might be able to think of 1 or 2 more.
For the most part, I agree with you on the requirements there. However, I'd say that in addition to Red Dead, Transformers and Mass Effect 2 passed for me (Transformers was a bit short, but I liked it enough that I replayed it to about 30 hours). Still, the PS2 era had a lot more games that I didn't feel guilty paying full price for.

I played and liked both Two Worlds and the SAW video game.... what does that say about my standards?

I have relatively low standards. All I require of a game is that it is fun and is worth the money I paid for it. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

EDIT: Crap, double post. Sorry 'bout that. Internet acting wonky.
