I have pretty low standards, I'll play it as long as it's fun.

I have high standards but not in the same respect as your friend, for me it simply has to be a good game but its does not matter how old it is, if a game was great when it was released then its great now.

though i don't have too many standards, my BIGGEST pet peeve is when a shooting game doesn't get the weapon foleys right. fantastical shit like lazer cannons and deathrays can sound like broken windchimes tinkling in the wind for all i care, but by Throne i demand a Browning M2 to sound like a damn Browning M2.

also a minor concern, bolts must move when firing, and magazines must fall onto the floor when dropped.

I'll play any game that is good, no matter how old.

In fact the last two games I bought on Steam are Deus Ex and Mafia (while both are from the 2000's their graphics are definitly aged.)

I can be turned off by certain old games simply because they don't have certain userfirendly qualities I now take for granted. For example, I'll never play Wizardry, because they make you draw your own map rather than having one onscreen for you. I got turned off of old King's Quest games because typing in just the right command is much more of a hassle than point and click. Also, I got tired of repeadetly mashing up right up right up right to move up stairs, especially when no edge gravity meant I could die by walking off stairs. Retro doesn't always mean more simple.

Sometimes I wonder if most of us really don't have very high standards and we all just think we do out of groupthink. I can be pretty suggestive, so when someone berates a game, I'm prepared to hate it until I actually try it and find that it's flaws don't bother me that much.

Myself, I think my standards were heightened with the rise of casual gaming.

Its pretty solid to assume that many people on this site do not like most of the games for the Wii, because they cater to an entirely different audience. Gaming is becomming a business rather than a hobby. And because we see the games released as crap or worse, we become a bit more critical than we used to be about certain things.
Well put. I believe gaming is about a)entertainment and b)skill. Now Nintendo only seem to be catering to a), specificaly to young children, parents, and casuals, which is in direct opposition of more hardcore gamers like myself. Don't get me wrong, I don't hold anything against them, but it does concern me that developers are more likely to focus on making dull, simplistic games for the casual market, which could put more serious games in further danger of neglect.

I wouldnt say I have high standards (except FPS, those need to be perfect to warrant attention) but I have trouble replaying old games. Early 3d era games especially. I have tried to go back to Ocarina of Time so many times all I have now is save files only up to the zora area. I can still play through Mario and other old 2d scroller types I havent spent much time with but older games I treat like handhelds. Like I could be playing something better....

But mostly its an aversion to replays. If an old game cant feel new to me Ive played it too much and I move on.

As long as i can tell the difference between a crate and a human being I'm fine. The gameplay and story matter the most for me.

I don't have very high standards regarding the graphics of a game. If a game is good to behold and fun to play, I'll make it a bit of a hobby to get good graphics and preformance.
But I'm from a generation that thought that wolfenstein 3D was kick-ass because of it's graphics, so maybe I'm not too hard to please.

Well I have high standards for games like Mass Effect, but have low standards for games like Dynasty Warriors, so I end up liking Dynasty Warriors and hating Mass Effect.

If I enjoy it, I'll play it. Hell, if I get into Let's Playing even if I DON'T enjoy it I'll play it if it's so bad it's funny.

I have a friend that simply won't play anything retro because it's not 3D or complex or has a ground breaking story. With those standards, it made me think, how high are the standards of The Escapist.
But they are complex and have a ground breaking story?
Like Chrono Trigger?

I cant help but to think on the graphics whore thing that its not just a graphics thing.

I play a LOT of old games. The graphics do not bother me.. However i basically only play old games to replay them.

Perfect example is that I like RTS games, as well as RPG games. I cannot play fallout, or Alpha centauri like my friend has repeatedly begged me to play. I just do not have the same nostalgia for it that he does since I had never played them before.

However, its really not the graphics that bog me down, its the technical innovations that arent present that have since become standard. Im having a hard time thinking of an example off the top of my head. I guess ... on a pc game not being able to remap the buttons, which remapping buttons is a fairly standard thing on most PC games now it wasnt so much over a decade ago. Theres plenty of other examples, but I called in to work as Stupid today.. so the old noggin isnt quite as quick on the uptake as it normally is.

I'll give most games at least one go if they're offered to me, but I won't go out of my way to rent or buy games that I don't think are up to snuff.
