Do you judge people by their spelling?

Sometimes. my sister was once trying to buy a textbook online for university English from this girl online and my sister was asking about the books condition and the girl emailed her back saying "do u want too by my buk or not?"

It's a wonder that woman even passed that class. :/

Although if it's just a simple typo then no, but this internet shorthand business can be downright stupid sometimes as shown by the above quote.

Grammar and spelling isn't that important to me as long as I don't have to struggle to make sense of it.

No, I don't judge people who genuinely spell something wrong. Eg. Frend instead of friend.

But I do judge people if they use things like "u" instead of "you".

Hey! English is my second language, and I am terribly fluent in it. At least, that's what I'd say, even though I am very humble.

Though yeah, I get your point. It's not really a privilege to be here, a privilege only reserved for the most weathered of linguists. Everyone can join, and if you want to ignore those who don't use those they'res and theirs and stuff correctly, then it's your loss. Their ideas might not match their spelling.

I have a "Three Strikes" rule about spelling. No one gets their "they're-s" or "your-s" right 100% of the time. As long as they're making a decent sentence I'm fine with a few typos.
What I can't stand?
"Should of, Could of, Would of"
That shit drives me insane.
Just for the record:
Should've is short for "Should have", as in "These asshats should have stayed in school and read a book, so that they could've known that their typing skills would have been better."

Or when people shorten shortened words. I know someone that shortens That to "dt" D fucking T? It took me ages to figure out what the hell he was on about, alongside replacing everything with numbers, or shortening words to the point where I have to sit there figuring out what the fuck someone's trying to say. What annoys me even more is it doesn't even help you type quicker, most people I know can type miles faster than people who use numbers and shortened words.

It's even more annoying when they take the piss out of you "y u spkin in prpr english n shit lol" Go die in a fire. Also, people who fucking put lol on the end of every sentence annoy the hell out of me.

I do, after a certain point. The occasional misspelled word or typo is perfectly okay, but if a given person's typing is so poor that it makes you wonder how they mustered the brain cells to figure out how to make letters and words appear on the computer screen, then it's probably okay to dismiss the person as an idiot.

Context also matters, more than spelling or typography. A poorly-written but cogent point is still good, but even the best-written posts are still nonsense if they have no point.

I catch myself often dismissing people entirely because of their spelling. Not the occasional typo, but the consistent mistaking of words like their/there/they're or where/were/we're, words that sound alike when spoken out loud.
If someone posts anything starting with "My aunt and uncle own a shop and when were going to there place..." I tune out, decide that this poster is an idiot and completely ignore anything they have to say, no matter how valid or thoughtful it may be.

Does anybody else have this experience?

Spelling, generally speaking, has no relation to intelligence. With that in mind I really try not to judge people based on their spelling. But since I'm usually a good speller and mildly competitive to boot, sometimes I do. Am I proud of it? No. However, I do try to help bad spellers where I can, because they're often judged unfairly (as I know all too well), and it is beneficial to clear communication.

If their first language is not English then im perfectly alright with them using rather poor grammer and spelling. Although the English language is actually fairly easy to learn and is pretty basic when compared to many others.

As a preface: Poe's Law is in effect. I can't tell.

Anyway, English is not "pretty basic." Grammatically it's not really less complex than many other languages. Spelling-wise, it's a complete mess and a hodgepodge, to the extent that it's quite difficult for even native speakers to accurately spell every word because there's little rhyme or reason to the process.

If its blatantly obvious yes. If they can't be bothered to take the time to proof read or even learn to attempt proper spelling (or god's forbid use the spellchecker) then they deserve to be dismissed out of hand.

For me it all depends on what their writing is for. If it posted on a forum or a comment on youtube, I don't judge. If the error is in an email or letter with something business related, I will judge. I don't buy from places that send me an email saying, "giv meh ur monyz adn i wil giv u gewd stuf."

Yes, I do.

Barring any legitimate excuse like dyslexia, writing English as a second language, or misspelling something on purpose for emphasis and the like, the only thing that I know about a certain poster on a forum is how he or she presents him/ herself through writing.

If they can't even be bothered to spell correctly (or reference the Internet to look up tricky words), why should I care to read it? Why should I take someone who uses thumbpad text in a normal conversation seriously?

Personally, I'm not a very good speller, but I do at least take the time to figure out why my words end up with little wiggly red lines underneath them.

That's my opinion. You don't have to like it

Man (woman?) after my own heart. The ability to accurately convey meaning and structure is a basic element of intelligence. So why wouldn't I judge those who don't live up to my standards as wanting? I hold no-one to a standard I don't hold myself to.

I'm willing to make concessions for those for whom English isn't their first language. Just kinda hard to tell at times over the tubes.

It's not about perfect spelling or grammar, but about effort. If you don't care enough to put some effort into it when writing, why should I care enough to put the effort in to read it?
