I hear people say this all the time in regard to horror movies , the black guy ALWAYS dies. I'm wondering if this is true . I personally have not seen a single horror movie in which the token black guy doesn't die at some point . Usually it is in the middle of the movie , sometimes it's at the end , but nevertheless he always dies. So my question is :

Do you know of any horror movies in which the 'token' black guy doesn't die?

The Thing as someone already mentioned, though nicely enough, there are no real 'token' black guys in that movie. Keith David, while not the main character doesn't die like you'd expect. (Though if you've seen the film, it's a rather bleak ending either way.)

Kind of spoiler thing, is it not?

Oh well. The one that comes to mind for me is House on Haunted Hill.

In the original Night of the Living Dead, the black guy is the main protagonist, and outlives everyone else in the movie. He is shot at the very end, but since EVERYONE else dies, I guess this is progress? If nothing else, it was a huge landmark for going against stereotypes in film.

Not where he doesn't die.

At least he didn't die FIRST in Ghost Ship(Shitty movie, don't bother watching it if you haven't).

That's something that's bothered me a bit about horror movie and that's been joked about lots of times. How the black guy is usually the first to go.
OH WAIT!

Anacondas is sort of a horror movie, right? In Hunt for the Blood Orchid the black guy doesn't die!

EDIT: I just remembered another point i was gonna make. That statistically the ethnic minority has a higher probablity of dying all together since there's usually just one or 2 of them.

Oh, and that reminds me that in Hunt for the Blood Orchid there really was 2 black guys and one of them dies. SPOILER WARNING!

It's like the directors feel like they have to kill at least ONE black guy/gal through their movie or the universe might tip out of balance or something.

Yeah...about that...

There is no clear indication whethe ror not Childs, or even MacReady were not consumed by the thing. That's the whole point of the final scene where you have two dudes sitting face to face--one who may or may not be infected therefore changing the entire assumed dynamic--distrusting the shit out of each other. Also: flame thrower.

For all we know the black guy died...along with anyone else.

in the alternative ending of dawn of the dead from the the 1970's (the first one where they go to the mall) the black man doesnt commit suicide he fights against the zombies and makes a break for the escape chopper
Fucker, you bet me. But I don't think that's the alternative ending, I've got that on DVD and he survives.

Back on topic the Dawn of the Dead remake the black guy doesn't die first, although he does fuck things up for other people.

True, but I like to imagine they froze to death never having taken their eyes off each other. At the very least:
even if one or both -were- infected, the entire base was wrecked, meaning for the time being The Thing would have been forced back into hibernation.

That's optimism. Right there :)

I hope the "remake" turns out to be good.

Funny, that was the ending I saw on DVD. you sure the other ending wasn't alternative?

Indeed, at that time, it was rare to have black main protagonists. And I think he was making a point. Was it really made clear he was shot because he was a zombie? It was a party of rednecks that found him. I love all the depth of Romero movies.

In day of the dead I think a black dude survives, and I suppose technically "big daddy" from land of the dead survived...because he started the film as a zombie, and wasn't killed by the end of it.

All of the examples I can think of are George a Romero movies. He never seems to get the credit for being one of the pioneers of equal treatment in film.

Not sure that counts, he is one of Stephen King's magic blacks who solve all the poor white folks troubles.
