But pointy things hurt.

Speaking of pointy things, what high school did you attend and what uni/ further school are you attending(if any)?
I probaby wouldn't feel comfotable giving my high school out online, since it has the place I live in its title an perhaps not the full name of my college, but it is a film school. I guess from the trail of bread crumbs people can work out where... if they can even be bothered.

I be james. I have no problem giving out stuff like ASL (17/M/UK), or stuff like social website accounts or msn adresses as there's very little anyone could do with that as far as i know anyway.

I don't give out my actual name online, just my nickname, I tell people that I live in Iceland and my age.
Sometimes, if I meet someone online that's from my country I may give out my details when I've known them for a bit, other than that I tend to just keep to myself.
As for Myspace etc, I have a myspace, but that's just to keep in touch with old friends.

I'm kinda a bit of both worlds. I'll divulge a lot of information about myself, things that have happened to me, places i've been, really my life is an open book to anyone who asks. However, I am careful to ensure that any kind of information that could be used to locate me, reveal my name or any other means of personal identification.

Everything I give out, while specific to me, is generic enough that it can't be used against me in any way (aside from some assumedly good natured roasting when I make hideous spelling errors or an illuminated fool of myself).

Perhaps my I am a touch paranoid, though, as the majority of my friends, even most of the closest don't know what my name is. Jay is a handy moniker, and it's who I am, but it's not me, and if that makes sense to you, welcome to the club, don't open the blinds and make sure you weren't followed :D

I'm a 15-year-old who lives in Sydney. That's all the info you're getting from me.

Anonymity is a necessity on the internet.
Anonymity is always a lie online, if they wanted, they'd get anything they are looking for...

I tend not to care much, usually I don't spill the beans, just send a handful of what I want to say, and most of the time I only keep touch with me closest friends through the tubes because it's cheaper and more reliable than my cell phone... so well...

If you want to know more Google "Gothic dragon" and my name.
I'm not to fussed about giving out my details on the net but if you want it you have to go find it.

Google Analytics are to blame? I thought myspace was responsible for that one?

Hard to say, but considering that I think 90% of websites (Quoted from a lecture I went to on the topic) use Google Analytics I would say that it's more likely. The thing is that GA has a clause which requires you to tick a box saying that you don't want information to be transmitted back to Google for storage. As this is buried deep in the small print, and the software is designed to tell a site owner everything possible about IPs, site use and the like... it's an interesting combination.

Ooh, that's a sneaky little trick. "Don't be evil" is turning out to be a bit of a lie, it seems.

I'm not even thinking Google Analytics, Facebook or mySpace (which are new ways to stalk people and show that the internet/WWW was a good idea, but that the masses turned into the horror it is today (look for Zeta Toys, and burn your eyes like I did)...

A friend of mine hosts a site for fansubs, you can download .sub/.srt files for TV series.
We were talking about internet fallacies the other day while getting drunk and he confessed that without anys econd thoughts he would turn the full list of users of the police would ask for it, and that anyway there is no anonimity because "they" usually know what you are doing (you bought something with your credit card ? SPOTTED! you filled a semi-intrusive form to join a forum or open an e-mail box ? DOX available! etc.), and even with proxies it's always possible to identify somebody, as far as I can understand...
