'Lo fellow escapists!

Now before we start let's get something out of the way: Not 'lie' as in lying down on the ground, but as in, saying things that are not true.

Lying can be used for both good or evil, or evil with good intentions and vice versa. Of course there are different levels of lying, from the small white lies to the big fat corporate global world-altering lies.

But back to you, and what I want to ask you;

Have you lied to anyone you know recently (whether online or in real life)? And if so, was that lie justifiable or simply the easiest way out? When is it alright to lie - or is it ever alright to lie?
[sub]Feel free to not answer all of the questions. Just deal with those you feel most relevant/have time for.[/sub]

For those wanting a definition of lying, here's a bit from wikipedia:
A lie is a type of deception in the form of an untruthful statement, especially with the intention to deceive others, often with the further intention to maintain a secret or reputation, protect someone's feelings or to avoid a punishment or repercussion for one's actions. To lie is to state something that one knows to be false or that one does not honestly believe to be true with the intention that a person will take it for the truth. A liar is a person who is lying, who has previously lied, or who tends by nature to lie repeatedly - even when not necessary.

Lying is typically used to refer to deceptions in oral or written communication. Other forms of deception, such as disguises or forgeries, are generally not considered lies, though the underlying intent may be the same. However, even a true statement can be used to deceive. In this situation, it is the intent of being overall untruthful rather than the truthfulness of any individual statement that is considered the lie.

Serious lies (such as perjury, fraud, and defamation) are punishable by law.

Just a few seconds ago.
"Are you alright?" "Yeah".
I do that all the time, so I guess that makes me a compulsive liar.
However, other than people asking how I am feeling, I don't lie. I just phrase the truth in a way that confuses others.
So not technically lying apart from when people ask how I feel, just stating the truth in a way that won't be understood. If I don't want to tell the truth, yet have to.
Not my fault if it isn't understood.

Apparently I'm a Compulsive Liar, according to my Parents. But I don't listen to them. I'd say the last time I lied was.. two days ago when the Teacher asked me if I had my Homework done.

I try to, but I usually end up telling the truth eventually. I can be blunt sometimes.

Grey, stop being depressing, I already cried once today.

On topic, I lie all the goddamn time. Mostly to gauge others reactions to lying and to perfect my technique. I have a certain amount of acting talent, not to mention I enjoy manipulating people into doing what I want them to. Quite simple, once you understand how people work.

I don't lie, I simply frame the truth to make it seem that what I am saying means A when it really means B. The other person assumes and I do not correct them. So I get out clean yes? Not a liar?

Yes. Everyone lies. Even if they're really dead-set on not lying, they use rhetoric to disguise the truth.

Yep. Though I rarely go out of my way to lie, I bullshit people all the time. For instance, I talk out of my ass if I know I can get away with it.

I lie as it benefits me - but don't if it'll hurt others. Used to not have that proviso though, and I'd lie frequently to put the blame for my actions on others. Now it's more just to smooth over social situations, or when telling the truth will cause me an unnecessary problem that I've better things to do than experience. Example: My mother calls and asks how I'm finding moving house. Truth is, I've not done anything to move house recently, I've had other priorities, but if I say that I'll get whined at - now, I don't live with her, so by lying about this nothing bad happens to her - but if I'm truthful, I get an earful of complaints that won't help and will just irritate me. So I say that I've talked to a few landlords but nothing's turned up yet. That's the sort of lying I do, as often or as little as necessary.

Everybody lies. I try not to, but I still do, a lot probably.
A lie by omission though, I probably can't go a day without. That's what happens with a secret girlfriend.

Sometimes I lie :) but only when the outcome of the conversation is not significantly differed. For example, if a friend of mine (who is extremely me-me-me kind of girl) starts having a conversation with me and asks me how I am, I always say I'm fine or OK because I know regardless of what I do say, she's not going to care anyway. So whats the point in telling her the truth, say if someone had died and I was in a terrible state? None whatsoever. And I have been there, but do you know how that conversation went:

"Oh that's terrible I'm sorry"
"It's okay, it just takes time"
"Yeah. Sooooo me and this guy..."

*shrug*
May as well skip the unnecessary parts as she doesn't want to know.

Other lies - well usually if people ask how I am if I'm not okay I usually say fine or OK out of habit regardless of whether I am really fine or okay. I think in some research somewhere (it was in a ladies magazine, might have been sketchy) the biggest lie told in the UK is "I'm fine" so its nice to know I'm somewhere in the norm.

Oh, and the answer to "does it make my thighs/bum/tummy look big?". Regardless of whether it does or not, trust me, if you've ever had to be horrendously bored going shopping for 8 hours with someone who then gets depressed regardless of what they put on, you will always answer positively to this question whether its the truth or not. Its for your own sanity.

Yeah. Not to my family members, and not about anything I deem irrelevant, but everything else is fair game. The question is not if I lie, but what the subject at hand is.
