I have often wondered whether people who run them are actually good people, you know, beneath all of their well...charity. However to me they seem like guilt-tripping, ruthlessly over-exaggerating people only slightly better than politicians, what are your views?

Charities, in my opinion, are there to help people. It's true that they can often over exaggerate things, such as the shelter commercials I see often, but their overall intentions are good.

I support the Give MaxFan All Your Money charity...

No, really, it's good to find out what they actually do, if the money you give is really going to help people or just paying those who run the "charity." And the thing about figures is you can make them say what you want.

While sometimes the methods used to get people to contribute to charity are questionable (as are some of the causes charities support, occasionally), I think charity in itself is a good thing. Nothing wrong with those who have more trying to do some good and helping out those who have less. However, some do cross the line, and you occasionally have to look into where your money is going...

The people who run good charities don't get a whole lot of money. If they wanted to unscrupulously gain money there are easier ways of conning victims. All the people I know who run charities spend a lot of their time and money trying to make their community a better place. There are fake charities out there, but those are pretty easy to avoid with a simple Google search.

I can't believe how long it took me to figure out that the the term chuggers was a corruption of "charity muggers". They really get on my goat, those people. They do know that we know they get commission on their "sales", right?

I want to give money because I want to help a certain cause, not because I've been guilt tripped into it by being shown fly covered starving babies or abused kittens.

Unfortunately chuggers work, they've realised they get a lot more money back from a relatively small outlay, and also, once they have got people signed up to 3 or 5 pounds a month or whatever, for most people, its just not worth the hassle to get it cancelled, so they have a constant flow of many many small amounts of cash flowing in.

Generally, if I'm feeling like I'm being forcefully pushed into donating, I'll find a similar charity to give to instead, I don't like being emotionally manipulated. Similar reasons to why, if I'm in a relationship, I'll downplay valentine's day, she'll get a card and candy maybe, but I'm not going out of my way to do as I'm told by Hallmark. I'll treat her well all the time and exceptionally occasionally at random so it feels special instead of expected.

I do however love charity shops, my love of books is pretty much solidly fed by these and libraries, only a few authors get my money for new books. (OMG PIRACY etc)

Smaller charities probably have volunteers (and I suppose the big ones will too, out there somewhere) but you ever wonder why those people are so keen for you to sign up there on the spot, especially if you say you'll just do it via their website. That's because they're salespeople and will take whatever opportunity to seal the deal. You'll notice it's rare to see a girl chugger stop another girl on the street, they will always go for the guys (and the same reversed for the guy chuggers as well) - at least that's how I see it get done here.

I've been stopped by the same girl chugger working for practically every one of the big charities under the sun on the same street. Maybe one day, I'll eventually break and sign up, but not today.
