I'm curious as to how many people on the Escapist have a favorable opinion of hip hop. Often when people discuss music on the website, I see that many people put they like just metal, or most music that isn't hip hop and country. Personally, I enjoy real hip hop a great deal. Artists like Common, Nas, and other artists with soulful and meaningful music often can pique my interest.

So, what is your opinion of it?

Edit: Here is a track that I love, regardless of the fact that I'm not particularly religious.

A little bit, I have little of it though.

The only hip-hop song I really enjoy a lot is Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz.

I puke at the oh-so popular gangsta rap and the R&B/hip-hop mix-up (the Kanye Wests and Akons of this world) crap makes me puke as well.

However, I'm an utter fanboy of this kind of hip-hop:
Fantastic music to put on after a tough day, perfect to unwind, slow down and relaaaax. And the anime that's it from is awesome to boot, and I too don't generally watch anime! Go figure!

Hell yes I do :)
Anyone who doesn't like Hip Hop go and listen to Shad K - Rock To It, it might change your mind :)

Short answer...nah.

Long answer: Well, I don't like what I would call 'Hip-Hop' but I like UK Grime music.

Here are some examples, let me know what you think:]

The song starts a little into the video...but yeah, bear with it ^_^. And it has Tim Westwood in it. What a winner.

:D.

Yes, but I like most types of music honestly...
Annnd I grew up listening it (among other things). By the age of three I knew the words to every song off Salt n' Pepa's album "Very Necessary." I LOVED them.
Embarrassing, no? ._.

I like a fair amount of it, but really I listen to many different kinds of music, I can't think of one that I would exclude. Music in all its forms is a great love of mine.

Some of it... mostly Nerdcore, though there has been an occasional song on overplayed top-40 radio stations that has pleasantly surprised me.
...very occasional.

Speaking of... the most romantic song I've ever liked:

I enjoy me some Busdriver, Shad and Aesop Rock.

I would love to hear about some other interesting hip-hop/rap artists though since naming three artists within a huge genre is somewhat narrow-minded.

To be honest, I can't stand hip hop, mainly due to the people I see preforming it and the peole I see listening to it. Its, in my opinion, a crappy genre of music.

Having said that, The Gorillaz are one of my favourite bands, and hip hop. But alot of their songs don't feel like conventional hip hop. So yeah, I'll stick to my rock xD

It's the main genre that i listen to, there's good stuff in both underground, mainstream, old and new hip-hop. You just have to find it.

No, not really. I like a few Kanye West and Eminem songs but people judge me when I call that hip-hop so I guess my answer is a resounding 'No'.

Yes. But pretty much exclusively underground Dutch stuff. Per Verz, Fotosynthese, Tim Beumers, Spinal, Fresku. Great artists. I also have a thing for French hip hop, because it really is an awesome language to rap in.

I can't stand all the mumbling 'tards pretending to be pimps though, gtfo of hiphop and crawl your ass back to Hollywood.

This.

I particularly enjoy playing obnoxious hip hop and pop to piss off people who don't like it. Picture me slowly driving through my parents' gated subdivision blasting "SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS" at full volume as 70+ year-old snowbirds stare angrily

Damnit, ninja'd.

YOU SEE, THE KIDS, THEY LISTEN TO THE RAP
AND IT GIVES THEM THE BRAIN DAMAGE
WITH THEIR HIPPIN' AND THEIR HOPPIN'
AND THEIR BIPPIN' AND THEIR BOPPIN'
AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE JAZZ
IS ALL ABOUT

I've yet to find hiphop I'd classify as 'awesome' but Slam was pretty good... if it counts... foncuz.
