How do you feel about open endings?
Personally I don't really like these but I see why people do them?
If you don't know what I mean It's like when the series/movie ends with something like somebody knocking on a door and then...ITS OVER kinda of like oh I don't know
ELFEN LIED!!!!!!!!!!!
Or when it cuts to black in mid sen.....................

Very much depends on what movie/show/whatever it is. As for the hard cut of the *cough* *cough* show you mentioned, i first felt it was a bit unecessary, but afterwards i found it to be fitting.

Well IMO that really depends on what. If it's a movie i tend to get a little bit pissed.
But as i said really really depends. (usually if it's been like a long journey to somewhere i wanna see it end, like imagine if Star Wars ended with Luke finding Palpatine and Vader).

No. I dislike speculating and hoping.

I don't demand that every single loose end be tied up but I should not be expected to do the work of the writing staff.

Well, it depends.
Metro 2033
Had a very well done open ending, as it was still open but closed up a majority of loose ends.

But as a rule of thumb, I do like a very high amount of closure for my stories.

Spoiler boxes are kinda redundant when you don't say what show/game/whatever you're actually spoiling until people open them up.
How do you say what show it is on the spoiler box?

I, personally, prefer a bit of openness in the endings-- I like to be able to speculate a bit about where the character went after the game/book/movie ends. Since my favorite pastime is making up little worlds in my head, I can use that particular book/movie/game as a starting point as I make up my own adventures for the characters.

Of course, I also like for the adventure that the book/movie/game is based around to have a bit of closure as well... it's a delicate balance.

I don't mind provided everything important is closed. For example, Heroes had a pretty good ending (I'm one of those rare few who enjoyed every series and stuck with it all the way). All loose ends were tied up, but then it allowed (with Claire's actions at the end) plenty of scope to return if the show hadn't been cancelled. But because it was, the ending also fits really nicely as a 'hope' symbol for the post-humans in the series. Whereas an ending like, say, the first series of the anime Umineko no Naku Koro Ni, is infuriating because it leaves so many things unsaid and open - which is also really bad if there's no guarantee the show will return, just like Umineko probably won't have a second series made. And yes, I know I can simply play the games instead to find out what happens, but not everyone has that luxury...

It depends, open endings work really well in short, artistic stories like Limbo. But are quite frankly infuriating when you where in it for the long haul. Imagine if the Lord of the Rings trilogy ended while Frodo was still in the crater of mount doom, yeh, pretty annoying.

When it comes to other video games (specifically RPGs involving alot of character building and plot related choices) I hate it when there's only one set ending. If Commander Shepard dies at the end of Mass Effect 3, and there's no way around it and no after game sandbox, I will be very mad at you Bioware.

Even if you die they'll give you sandbox (depending on if the death was ment by Bioware, otherwise better start a new game+). But Shepard dying? Could be kinda cool..

I want to say that every type of ending has its merit. But I watched Elfin Lied. And I hate those fuckers for the ending. So..balls. And whatnot.

It's the whole problem of confidence.
When something is confident in itself and acts on it it works two ways:

When being rightly confident in others eyes: Awesome

When being wrongly confident in others eyes: Arrogant prick

It depends. When it's an "insert your interpretation here" kind of open ending, and a well executed one, I have no problem with it. The "we're totally going to sell you a sequel, sucker" endings, on the other hand, are really irritating.

That would make two of us then. Glad I'm not the only one.

OT: Personally, I've got mixed feelings about open endings. If done well, an open ending can be a good thing... if not, it can ruin an entire series.

I dunno... I think a hero's sacrifice to insure the destruction of the One Ring would have made a good ending too. If it had just cut off while he was holding the ring over the pit of magma, then I totally agree with you.

I don't like endings period. Even if all the loose ends are tied up I always want to know what happens next. How will this character fare in the future? What is going to happen to so and so's child when s/he's ruler? I get too engrossed in the worlds that authors and writers have built for me.

When done well, I love a good open ending. Like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Dude tries to drop the two old rifles that link him and his crew to the series of crimes into the river. He hears a *thunk* instead of a *splash* and looks over the ledge. The guns are sitting on a ledge. The rest of the crew are told the guns are worth millions of dollars. Dude tries to reach the guns so he can nudge them into the lake, holding onto a light with one hand and reaching with the other, and he is slightly touching them. His phone starts ringing. Movie ends. Does he stop to answer his phone and find out the guns are worth a fortune or does he push the guns into the river and then answer the phone?

Believe me the scene is much more hilarious than my description. Almost like a Chaplin sketch.
