Note: To clarify we are not talking about imagined fan-ships, or relationships in shows that are currently at a friendship level. Myka an Pete from Warehouse 13 classify as best friends at this point for instance.

Back to the topic at hand:
Truth be told these romances are so overdone and half the time they are done to the point where you think that the parties involved are stupid.

It can be cute for a while, but that's not enough to keep the audience interested. Personally I think it's a very lazy tool and rarely makes sense in the narrative. It can be done really well. Since I've been rewatching Farscape I would say D'Argo and Chiana was done relatively well.

What is the line between cute and annoying? Is it the length of how long something is dragged out for? Is it how it flows with character development

Not particularly. Especially if it's a character that I legitimately like in a show, it pisses me off when the writers decide "Oh, well they can't have a functional relationship!"

Though it doesn't actively bother me either, because I've been in my own "Will they, won't they?" relationship for an extended period of time anyway, so my only issue is how predictable it is, because every single show with a male and female character set as main characters seems to do this nowadays.

I don't mind it so long as it's only for a short period of time and the relationship has some bearing on the plot.

It annoys the hell out of me when it's drawn out... or worse still, it concludes with the pair not being together then later on it's will-they-won't-they again and again (for example, Ted and Robin on HIMYM).

This pissed me the hell off in Battlestar Galactica.

Come on Starbuck, you *****, choose! Get it over with! Your drama with Lee and Sam is my least favorite part of the show!

I cant masterbate if they don't hook up with one another in the book, so for me it's extra hard

Are we talking Maddie and David stuff? Because these relationships work when they are written well, and Moonlighting fell apart when Maddie and David got together. I guess I like it when it remains unresolved, or when it is a small secondary thing, for example I thought the Josh/Donna thing just added to their characters, or at least it did while Sorkin was writing before the series turned into full blown soap opera. Did anyone hate the relationship between Mal and Inara in Firefly? Really?

What I hate is when two characters who show no interest in each other are suddenly thrust together. Life was a very enjoyable television show precisely because there was no sexual tension between the leads, then they wrapped up the series by thrusting them together in one of the most out of character moments I've ever seen.

They're all right.

I tend to enjoy them for the most part.

Occasionally, I'll get to a point where you know those "moments" happen and I get the urge to scream "kiss her/him! What the hell are you waiting for?! Rargggglhfrm!!!"

So... that could be a point when it gets frustrating. But it depends.

Like the mention of Fairy Tail is good with me because they've all just barely started. And it seems way too much stuff is going on that there's barely time for it to go down. And that's all right.

No, I say just make it official, I hate how 95% of anime tease ships and do fuck all with them.

Fairy Tail has a bunch of em, in your face romances but they haven't gone anywhere yet, except...
ErzaXJellal is concreted, not the ship I would have liked to see first.
Also...
LeviXGajeel is cute and heavily implied but has yet to actually go anywhere.
HappyXCarla is cute but like most, hasn't gone anywhere.
Now there is ElfmanXEvergreen, which is funny and cute.
Don't forget...

GrayXJuvia. With Leon suddenly expressing an interest in her and telling Gray he'd steal her and bring her to his guild, I think it's doing that cliche thing of realizing possible feelings only after competition appears. Though like the others... nothing has truly happened.

Oh man. Does anyone remember Bones?

That show was one of the best shows of the late 2000's on Fox. And while it's still going on it's a hollow shell of its former glory. It was fun watching the weak minded ask themselves if the two main characters would ever get together, but it was never about that. The show began to devolve and the writing grew worse and worse until I finally quit the show. It was pretty painful because the first 3 seasons were some of the strongest of the era. Later I heard that now the two main characters actually got together and that just destroyed my respect for the show. No respect for the characters. None.

I'm okay with them as long as they are resolved at some point and (if the series doesn't end right there) the couple continues to stay together and doesn't break-up almost every episode.

Case in point: Shawn and Juliet on Psych. Had a "will they/won't they" going for 4.5 seasons until they hooked up, and now they've been together for 1.5 seasons so far. I like it. They're good together (the fact that the actors playing them have been a couple since they met on the set helps too) and they act like reasonable human beings. They have great synergy.

J.D And Elliott on Scrubs was the bad kind for a long while until they FINALLY resolved it in season 8. After that it was good.

House and Cuddy was awful. They're hook-up was ridiculous (they STARTED by saying "I love you"), and while it was nice that it gave House some character development, they broke up less than a season later! And the reasoning for the break-up was just... retarded! But the show was on it's last legs by then anyway, but after that... i didn't even bother watching the last season. It just killed the show for me.

But you know, I think Toradora did it right. It is sort of a "will they or won't they," but throughout the process they aren't just teasing, they're growing the characters. The purpose of keeping them apart isn't just for suspense, it's to grow them and their relationship to the point where they're ready to see and accept it. I think that's when the "will they or won't they" romances shine--when the biggest thing that's keeping them apart is themselves, and the story is the development of their relationship. It can't simply be about teasing and tricking the audience, it has to be about the characters.

Did anyone here watch Clone High? I swear to god I almost flipped a ***** at that ending, because now that "Will-They-Won't-They" thing will never be resolved.

GODDAMMIT ABE LINCOLN! WHY COULDN'T YOU SEE THAT CLEOPATRA IS A ***** AND THAT JOAN OF ARC REALLY LOVED YOU!?

Man, why did they cancel that show?

I don't know, I'm pretty sure I've seen them as I've seen many of the shows mentioned so far, but I can't remember one, so yeah I guess I just don't care because for some reason I can't remember.

Depends upon how invested I am in the show I guess, and if I REALLY ship them. If I'm SUPAH OMG LOVE ALL THESE FEELS shipping them, than YES; it drives me mad (in the way the creators want me to); otherwise, it can be an irritant... Homestuck is one such instance. You can count the number of canon ships one one hand.
