It's when you force a certain piece of your computer beyond it's recommended capabilities. Think athletes taking steroids.

OT: Unfortunately for me I'm not computer savy. If I ever do get interessed in overclocking then I'll be sure to use google of all things.

Overclocking in its simplest technical explanation is pushing a piece of hardware beyond it's designed specifications. This usually refers to CPU's, GPU's and RAM. Using a combination of manual settings for the mainboard of the computer and additional voltage, you can cause a component to run at a higher frequency (speed) to increase performance of the machine at the cost of additional wear to the hardware piece and potential overheating issues. It has potential to damage systems if done improperly but in today's world, it can be done pretty simply for the most part.

Myself, I have the wonderful Core2Duo E8500 which is an OC'ers dream. Happily running stable under stress tests at 3.7Ghz with zero increase in voltage. Good times.

No, because I have to favor durability over performance thanks to not having the budget to replace parts that burn out on me.

I run at factory spec. Sure, I could overclock the shit out of an E6600 Core 2 Duo, 8800GT, and my RAM, but every minute of useful life counts.

My PC is custom made, with an Asus Rampage II Extreme motherboard that has been nothing but trouble,Intel 3.2 quad, 12 GB RAM, Nvidia 295 GTX in SLI.

The sodding motherboard has broke numerous times, for whatever reason, most likely overheating of the southbridge, and i've had to replace the damn thing about three times. Not kidding, and it's only one year old!

So no, no way would i overclock it - i'm far too paranoid about the damn thing overheating and dying on me yet again. What i have now is just fine and will last me years to come. I would only overclock if i needed the performance boost or was considering buying a new computer anyway.

Overclocking is always a compromise.
You sacrifice lifetime for performance.
I used to have my computer overclocked, but I don't see the point anymore. It doesn't matter to me if I get little better graphics.
When my computer gets old I'll overclock it, so that I can run the latest games for another year.

Oh and for you guys who think there's no improvement: Overclocking your GPU should grant you at least a 10% boost. (If your gpu is the bottleneck, that is.)

I used rivatuner and furmark when I clocked my GPU. GPU-Z is good too, but not really necessary.

the only thing I did to power up my PC was changing graphic card and and power block.

Be very carefull because simple mistake can cost you alot of money. Always make sure that the you conect the wires corectly and that the ventilator works good so you wont overheat.

No, I can't risk doing damage to my laptop. My dad's desktop is overclocked though.

I underclocked my cpu in order to prolong its klifespan. My pc costed 500 euro which nowadays is all you need to run everything on max settings.
well actually its alot more than enough, hence the underclocking

At the risk of sounding like a complete computer-illiterate idiot, how does overclocking work? How do you do it?
Thanks in advance.

I've overclocked my graphics card a little bit, can't remember the numbers. It seems to be running pretty well, no crashing, no burning. Once I upgrade to a new processor I might overclock that but if I get the on I want it will have six cores...no need to overclock that!

I have never overclocked my PCs. They aren't exactly cheap, and I'd rather not pay for new pieces unless absolutely necessary.

Yes, I know the risks, if done properly, are low, but still, for me, it's just not worth it.

Overclocking's not 'that' risky, unless you're doing it by a very heavy amount (or doing it incorrectly) then you're not likely to shorten a components lifespan by much at all.

CPU's are especially resiliant unless you wack the vcore up too high and fry it.

If you're talking about the new AMD's, dont bother getting one if you're in to gaming.
