Do You Pay Attention to Post Counts?

If I see someone who has around 5k+ posts within a year, I am already disappointed in them, and some I can even see with 10,000 in a few months. I get the new user groups (not that new anymore, I'm stuck in the old days of the Escapist), and that it ups your count, but it still irks me. I've been here for nearly three (3!) years, and in a few user groups, and only have around 1,600 posts, and not a single warning. I just post when I feel like it, or try to make something responsible to the thread.

I normally do not add count plus quality of the post, but some of these posts I will admit make me ponder things. However, the only real thing that makes me pay attention is poor spelling and grammar, as those I usually do look at the post count, and then disregard the entire post. If they don't have the time to attempt proper spelling or grammar, then I don't have the time to read the post. Sure, no one's perfect, and I make tons of mistakes myself, but I try to do above average, and I learn how to fix errors over time. People with 5,000 or more posts that type by "texting" or such, I am immediately annoyed and refuse to read anymore posts of that person.

So in the end of my poorly constructed rant, I only pay attention to post counts as well as the following areas:

1) Grammar
2) Time spent
3) Quality of post

If those areas are poor and mixed with a high post count, I pay attention to the poster: to make sure I don't read any of their posts again in the future.

Post count and join date should be considered hand-in-hand.
I'd say 2000-4000 posts a year suggests a frequent but likely thoughtful poster. Over that suggests a socialite or poor contributor, and shouldn't be used to judge someone because there are too many variables.

There are only a handful of users with over 10,000 posts whom I feel are constantly admirable contributors.

I don't really pay much attention to post counts. Having a high post count isn't everything. Example: OP's post count is much higher than mine, but I've been here over a year longer.

I don't really care about post count. One thing I've noticed though, is that users with over 9000 posts tend to be spectacularly boring, either because they never say anything of value, or they're disconcertingly nice. Sometimes both.

You have received a three warnings and a suspension and also happen to have far more than 250 posts. Wouldn't that go towards proving number of comments means nothing when abiding by the rules is in question?

Actually, closer to 10 warning, 4 probations, and 2 suspensions. Also, one very nasty email argument with a mod over the appropriateness of thinnly veiled fapping jokes (which I lost. It's fun getting suspensions purely because a 6 word, targetless joke is, and I quote, 'icky').

Usually, if someone starts posting what you think are, for the most part, offensive and nonsensical arguments, and they are in the low triple digits, there's a good chance their trolling. If someone sticks with such behavior for over 500 post, you start entering the realm of 'oh shit, this loon is being serious'.

And no, you are not the first person to dabbled with the idea that I may indeed be a troll. I don't take it personally anymore.

Sometimes. I try to avoid that smug sense of superiority when I look down on people with smaller post counts that mine, but I do have a little bit more respect for people with massive post counts.[sub][sub][footnote][small][sub][sub][sub]Even if I do pity them.

I find the fact you do that rather disturbing actually. I've been a member for a decent amount of time but only have about 20 posts, the reason for this is I simply don't post very often, I read a lot of the forums but most of the time the general masses have already stated everything ive thought to say, so i see no point in arbitrarily posting whats already up there over 9000 times. That said, sometimes i dont read very many of the posts and just jump to the bottom to make my point, like this one haha

I didn't say you were a troll. Just that you have clashed with the rules.

No not really, I more look at the content of the post, I never understood the obsession some have for it. My count isn't high but I don't troll or anything, more of a reader than a writer. Pretty much just have the account in case the occasional thought pops in my head.

Nah, I take into consideration the time a user a user joined, more than their post count. I've seen people with 3000 posts but have only been members for like 3 weeks.

If they stick to the RP/Gaming Forum they can get that much in like a day.

Its a funny habit some of us pick up isn't it? We look at a person's post count, and we sometimes makes assumptions based on them. For example, any time I see someone with over Ten Thousand posts, I tend to treat them with more respect, since they must have payed attention to the rules and been reasonable to have lasted that long.

At the same time, I tend to look down on newer posters, since I'm still suspicious of people who might not yet know the rules, or are stealth trolls.

Then there are the regulars with a thousand posts or more, and I equate myself to being on the same level as them.

Does anyone else here do this? If you do, can you think of why we might set up a mental image of a forum hierarchy?

The only time I pay attention to post count is when the person in question does something to call it into question.

Example, there was a thread a week or so ago where someone was trying to get banned. Guy had been ranting that he'd been here 3 years without problems and all of a sudden he was getting modded left and right and thus the rules and mods were suddenly too strict. This caused me to look at his posting history and see that over those 3 years he was bragging about, he'd barely posted at all and had only started to post frequently recently. So hmm yeah, the only reason he wasn't getting in trouble before was because he wasn't posting before. Guess the problem isn't with the mods after all, is it?

Outside of things like that though, no, post count doesn't mean much to me.
