Do you play as yourself in RPG's?

Today's RPG's allow for a great deal of personal choice - what should my character look like? What kind of skills should he/she have? Should my character be good or evil? Games like Fallout 3 allow you to essentially put yourself in that situation and act as you would act.

But are your choices motivated by what you actually feel; by what you would actually do? Or are your choices motivated by your desire to make your character a certain way? I myself have found that I have an idea of what I want my character to be like before I start playing. I then act accordingly in game. I usually don't base what I say or do on what I'd actually do in that situation.

So what do you guys do?

I'm a male who comes from Chinese/East Asian descent.

That said when customization comes to play, I usually make my character a Latina female.

What does that say about me?

Well I like to think of myself as ethical, noble but with a wacky personality... or at least that's me in a noble sense. Hence in Mass Effect I made Shepard look like me (i.e just not customise him at all as the default face in essence IS me) and made him do all the things I would do, mostly make friends with aliens and be generally a good person. I like to be the good guy these days, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 all prime examples.

I try to make myself most like the person in the game, the traits I have, what I would do, etc/

That you have good taste in women :p

I either make myself or a firey redhead chick. Both are fun to look at :p

I tend to play a good guy, and sometimes go with what I think the character (who has said the things in the game so far) would say. I tend to develop the character in my head outside the game. When there are things I abhor in real life, I won't have my character (even an evil character) do them. An example is the racism in Mass Effect. I just wouldn't do it, despite being on my evil playthrough.

Gender curiosity is a fickle mistress.

I do indeed worship the auburn haired Goddesses, but most RPG customization gives really ugly red hair color.

When I'm not making a Latina female, I usually make a lanky ugly ************.

Which is how I imagine myself, though I will give myself a mohawk and what now. So I guess I do indeed play with myself.

I try to re-create myself as accurately as possible if that's what you're asking.

kind of, kind of not. I kill most slavers on sight and Mezzing people did make me feel uncomfortable. My characters are mostly vengeful and I decide who to kill based on who I like better

I go with whatever I would personally do if I was inside the world in question.

Usually a stealthy archer, with small magic influences if possible.

I always play a self serving wisecracker who takes every opportunity to steal or gain something personally. I also kill everyone who rubs me the wrong way.

To my recollection, I have deep core values and integrity and have never stolen anything major or killed anyone.

I usually start out saying that I want to make a character thats good and then a character thats evil but then again sometimes I degenerate from that and just follow what I believe to be right. It's made some pretty messed up characters.

I'm mainly thinking of games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 when I answer this question, just to give my post a frame of reference...

In terms of character creation, I always create a character I feel is good looking but based on my personal attributes - I guess how I would like to look. I tend to make choices I would make in a given situation, but given the black or white nature of most "choices" in RPGs this is usually the generic "good" option, so my character becomes some ultimate paragon of light.

I need to make a determined effort to do bad things, and generally save these bad choices for an alternate playthrough where my character is also designed vastly different from how I look (usually of the opposite gender too - I'm sure Freud would read quite deeply into my automatic urges to portray female characters as evil, but it's just a matter of circumstance).

I usually play out my 'good' side (which is actually harder than playing a bad character), but sometimes it's simply fitting to be evil as hell. My alignment depends on the context of the game.
