Do you play old games?

The only thing that stops me from investing more times in old games is a lot of the games I'd like to play require hours or tens of hours to fully get through. Compare that to a CD, which is probably about 50 minutes, or a book or movie, which you can do in a couple hours, it's often more time consuming to go back.

I do get that games are more of an investment, but does age come into that? I think time is something that unfortunately effects us all when it comes to playing all that we may wish to play, but one thing I know I don't do (or even think about) is giving priority to the more recent ones when I am choosing something new to play off of my shelf; to me they are all equally appealing.

Depends on how old. I plenty of games from the early 2000's, but only a handful from before that. A friend of mine has a Sega emulator thingy that comes with Gain Ground, which is a ton of entertainment.

That's because it is. Sorry, just had to get that out of my system. Yes, I play old games. Why the hell would something's age dictate whether or not people play/watch/read/do whatever? People still read the Divine Comedy, which is over 600 years old. I still play my original copy of Pokemon Sapphire, and I've almost completed System Shock 2 on Steam. Honestly, the kind of person who will dismiss something because it's "old" is the kind of person I'd rather not have breathing the same air as me.

I play through Shining Force 1 and 2 at least once a year. While the stories aren't anything special, the characters have a lot of personality to them (okay, not all of them, but who cares about Vankar?) and the boss battles are quite memorable. The tactical battle system isn't something that ages so it's not like their gameplay is vastly inferior to others in the genre. Also, the games have some of the best music from that era:

Indeed I do. Well, my older games list has gotten smaller due to finally getting around to playing them but I was quite restricted on platform growing up and lacked money for many games and magazines to tell me what was available.

I missed out on a lot of games from previous years so I do tend to play older games as opposed to newer games. Monetary restraints keep me from playing most new games though...I still don't own a PS4, my PC isn't capable of handling games more complex than say, System Shock (for example; I can't play TF2 in offline bot...or training matches) and while I DO have a Wii U, I almost never buy games new for it with Twilight Princess being the most recent exception...of course, that game is technically a decade old...

Yeah, I definitely play older games...almost exclusively.

Aside from Terraria and TES, Steam is mostly where I play old games, since new games I just get on console. As a truly Hardcore gamer, I wish to play and appreciate all of gaming, not just from the last few years. I only first played Quake in 2012 and was amazed by it since I understood its improvements to games like DOOM and how it helped set the ground for games like Duke Nukem 3D and Goldeneye (which now are old games too).

Still got tons of old games to play though, especially NES/SNES games since they aren't on Steam and I don't buy a lot of VC stuff on Wii U/3DS often.

Sorry to nitpick, but Quake came out *after* Duke Nukem 3D.

Depending on what we're calling "old", I almost exclusively play old games. That xkcd about playing games on a 5 year lag is getting very close to being my reality. I just don't see any good reason to shell out ?60 for a brand new game, when there are so many classics I have yet to play, which I can get for a tenner.

I used to keep fairly up to date with new releases, but somewhere around 2009/2010, my interest started to wane. Nowadays, my ps2 sees more use than anything else I own. Whether it's an old favourite, or something I never got around to at the time, new games just can't compare in my eyes.

Yes, in fact I play more old games than I do new games in all honesty. From PS2 all the way to the N64 and Sega Genesis I love playing older games more than newer ones. Doesn't mean there aren't new games that I don't play but it was a simpler time in the 4th, 5th, and 6th generation of gaming.

Damn right I do. Even though I've got a pretty beast computer nowadays, I still like to fire up old games that are worth replaying. Replayed Fallout NV just to keep hype for Fallout 4, still waiting for that sale. I like to mix it up, even ROMs of old sega games that I used to play as a kid. Also replayed RE4 recently, and just got Titan Quest on Steam so I might get back into that.

Can't go past the classics like Doom and Quake as well, they just never get old (in my eyes). There's just nothing that compares to them these days in terms of combination of speed, level design, and atmosphere.

Yep. I generally do a play though of my favourite classic games once every year or so.

And then sometimes I get all nostalgic and play games from my youth that I may not have been overly fond of, but bring back great memories.

I went through a stage a few years ago where I was playing all the old Amiga games that I grew up on - I recall spending a ridiculous amount of time playing Wings and International Karate+.

Well, I'm currently playing through Company of Heroes again, which is a 2006 game. Is that old?
From time to time I'll play through some GoG game as well, but I mostly stick with the new. It's hard enough to keep up with all the new releases, so I don't want to spend too much time playing through old games, especially if I've already played them.

When I watch a movie I never question the decade it was made in, but it seems more common with games for some reason.

Because games more closely evolve with technology and gaming has been marketed almost solely on technical terms.

Exactly, and they age much faster because of it.

Only 8bit-16bit games/emulators and some old 2D PC games. I hate the squarish look of old 3D games - they are simply awful for my taste.

Uh... Fuck yeah I do? *deja vu* I mean, I still play on my GameCube, Gameboy Advance, Playstation 2, and certain MS-DOS games that even my laptop can run with no problems compatibility-wise...

Other than that, I guess you could say that my backlog is filled to the gills with "old games"...

I play what I feel like playing. Old games are included in this.

Go into my room, open a drawer, there's a working Atari 2600 with an adaptor. Look around the place, and while the PS3 and PS4 are on my desk along with a laptop, there's a working PS2 and PSX (the original), perfectly fine. Look around to my dresser, see the Gameboy Color I bought just so I could play Tetris and Wario Land.

I had an NES at my grandmother's place before she passed away. I had a Sega Genesis before I sold it, but later I emulated Sega, SNES, and NES to catch up on all the old games I never got to, but always wanted to. Bomberman? Love it. Megaman? Love it. I'm whiz at any Bomberman game, Missle Command, and Maze Craze. During high school, I set unbeatable scores for Dig Dug on all the computers.

I had, at some time, played a Tron arcade machine (along with other games at the arcade), and years later sought to play it on PC. Found it, played it, and for the first time beat it. Do I play old games? Yes, I do.
