Do you prefer protagonists that have the same race and nationality as you?

I'm not that bothered tbh. I play quite a lot of Mario games and he's an Italian/Mushroom Kingdom/American guy. But I usually do when in character creation, eg. in Saints Row 2. But then, if you didn't choose the cockney accent for your character, you weren't playing the game right.

Depending on how good the character creator is.... :)

If it is good enough, then im trying to make an adult copy of me... xD

But if not... then i just find what is best...

Thinking about it i've never really paid much attention to nationality unless the character in question has a hugely overplayed accent, it's never really occured to me until now :S

Race? Nah, it doesn't really matter to me... I think. I mean, it's not like I've had a lot of opportunities to experience anything but the standard white male :-/ I have no problem with the thought of it though ^^

Nationality? xD
If you put aside sport games and Empire: Total War, I think I can count to a grand total of two playable Swedish characters in games. Ever. There's that dude with the beard in Mercenaries 2 (he's even featured on the box!) and the Viggo dude from SSX3 (who I actually thought was pretty cool).

Meh, I can play any character. Any gender, any nationality, any species. It's escapism, innit? They don't need to represent me - in fact, they shouldn't.

Yes it is very important that if I'm watching a movie or playing a game that I can relate to them. Yes, I guess this can be thought of as 'racist' but really it isn't a negative thing. However, if we are playing role-playing games then I have no problem choosing the opposite gender and choosing something with blue or green skin, etc.

I prefer when it's not an Aryan muscle-monster. But I usually laugh when it is, so I dunno

Personally I don't care what race a game character is, if they are a horrible character I will hate them, and if their a good character I will like them.

I just have two words for this SILENT PROTAGONIST . It is the way to go, for all intents and purposes you are gordon freeman and as such he can be anything you see him as. It is any easy way to gel as a character. It erases all need for stereotyping. Hell if your really persistant im sure you could pretend it was a female.
You said it man ;)
No body can profile him because, YOU are that profile.

So much more immersive when you don't have some butch douchenozzle yappin in your ear either.

I am Uruguayan, so I can't really find any protagonist (or even NPC character) with my nationality (other than sport games)

I don't really mind the race, gender or nationality of the character, except when they go to great length to shove it (yes, I know Ivy is a woman, I don't need the giggling breasts to notice it)...

Race doesn't matter to me at all.

As for nationality... Well, most games with Irish characters tend to do them disastrously bad.

It's actually pretty ironic that Atlas from Bioshock had the most convincing Irish accent I've seen in a game.
Doubly so since his American accent is so hammy.

Wouldn't bother me. I tend to play through most RPGs as a pale as the driven snow white-woman, but I usually run through a variety or genders, colours and looks once my first play-through is done. (My third Mass Effect playthrough was done with a truly badass-looking black man. First male protagonist I'd created in quite a while. Gave me Samuel L Jackson flashbacks whenever I did something renegade.)

Well as an Australian i can't actually think of an Australian protagonist but as far as race goes I don't really mind although i do prefer them to be a human character

No. I may get a jeer or two because of this but I prefer the emo JRPG protagonists over the muscle-headed white Americans who clutter the shooter and WRPG scene.

I don't care in the slightest. They could be space banana slugs and I would enjoy the game. That being said, if given the choice, I do choose elves if I can, if only because they are generally better than humans gameplaywise and fit my playstyle.

As a white middle class anglo saxon male i have often found it difficult to find a character i truely relate to.
