I avoid wearing helmets most of the time and if there is an option to disable helmets from showing up, I will choose it.

No helms for me. I spent too long making my face to let it be covered up. Although I won't mind wearing a hat.

Almost never. 9/10 time they are not in keeping with the image I was going for.

I just use the no helmet mod in Dragon age: origin. Helmets that cover the entire face are the worst, I never use them in Mass Effect either.

When I actually use armor and it's a non-Bioware game, I always wear a helmet if given the option.

In Fable 1 I wore full armor and on top of all that I wore a fishing cap. I found it oddly badass.
Like it! I had the wizards hat instead of the helmet, and refused to wear the breastplate. Wearing full gauntlets and greaves just emphasises how shirtless you are.

Yes, as my character creation always looks fine in creation andturns into a wretched, mutated monstrucity when i leave the editor.

Depends on the helmet. Like if its the Holographic com thing in ME2, or a bucket with eye-holes. Also if cool hats are available.

Depends on the game, if it's one where my character will be doing a lot of talking to people in cities, I tend to avoid helmets, it just looks weird. In ME2 I wore the targeting visor for most of the game, it looked pretty cool, gave a decent upgrade, and didn't obscure Shepard's face.
However, in Dragon Age, I wore a full face helmet, so I sometimes break my own rules...

As many have already said, it depends on the situation.

As for "something-is-better-than-nothing" situation in some RPGs, I will usually pick one of the helmets which meets a decent blend of style of functionality. If the best item is utterly hideous, I'm probably going to go for a passable one (statistically speaking) which at least looks decent; I'm not an obsessive min/maxer. Just as an example, I'll wear the visor in ME2 (small enough to barely be there) over some of statistically better helmets (the Kestrel helmet? No, just no).

---

One of the more common features in RPGs lately is the option to toggle on or off helmets, you'll get the statistical benefit but can choose whether or not it will show up visually; an interesting choice, but still dependent on the situation (in my opinion).

Here, it's a matter of how good the helmet looks. If a helmet looks good on a character, why not leave the visual on? Other times wearing a helmet just makes sense; on a tank-type character, the helmet (usually) makes them look tougher.

Again, I tend to go for a mix of style & function (and I'm often willing to ignore min/maxing to do it). Even when turning off helmets is an option, I'm not above wearing a helmet which has an appearance I like; as opposed to a better one which looks awful (though significant stat gaps will make me consider the alternative).

---

Anyhow, it's all dependent on the situation. The setting, the character's role, the helmet itself, and even just how I'm feeling at the time. There's no one clear-cut answer to all of this.

Nope, no headgear unless I need it. IRL, I only wear a hat when it's raining and I hate the feel of helmets when bullets aren't flying, so I apply the mentality to games since I like to RP as if I were the character.

I've never thought of not wearing a hat in rpg games, I play world of warcraft and I always just went for the stat boost but now I think about it, it wdnt make much of a difference :)
In WoW you can just choose not to display it. Having an empty slot will get you nothing but trouble, especially the head (with meta gems).

OT: Usually, yes. I'm a min-maxer for the most part, though I have occasionally gone more role-playey in Oblivion, having my character wear a different set of clothes when in cities and around people, and then don armour once alone.
Holy hell your right I've just found the box that you tick to hide helm :) thanks for the heads up :)

Depends on what the helmet looks like. The stat bonus usually aren?t good enough that I care about them unless the game is really hard and sometimes I still won use them even if they are. No stat bonus would make me use the mage hats of DA:O. I usually take them off in towns and to talk to other characters tho.
As hilarious as watching shepard try to drink with a helmet on is in ME2 I wish it had a helmet toggle or you didn't have to go back to your ship to take it off.

It depends. If I make a cool looking character, I want to see their face. Having said that, with the helmet toggle of Dragon Age: Origins I didn't mind so much having it on.

If I need the protection, yes but mostly I try to avoid it.
For example, I spent hours in ME1 creating a Shepard who doesn't look like he got beaten up horribly when he was born. It's the only ME character I've made and the way he looks, has really grown to me. So I want to see his face and in ME a helmet isn't that helpful, so I never wear one. I hate it when there is a conversation going on and I have to stare at that helmet.
Strangely, I also don't like to wear helmets on games like Oblivion or Fallout, where I play in first person. I don't know why but I just don't like it when my character wears a helmet.

In the MMO Darkfall, the only armour you can enchant is the chest and the hemlet, so missing a helmet for +5 cool will usually mean I get -10 slashing protection.
