I like backstory. On the condition it makes sense.

The thief of virtue (in the elder scrolls games) is one of my favorites.
but I also read the Mass effect codex... and found some tiny mistakes in Me2 codex

I've read all of the books about the Dwemer in Skyrim. I find their lost culture and ruins really interesting.

It really does depend just how much the game grabs me. I have read the long stuff in the past (I sat through the entire re-write of the Metal Gear Solid 1 story within Substance even though I had played the first game not a week before I did), but most stuff, such as bestiaries and encyclopedias of made up animals and history that doesn't directly influence gameplay really seems redundant. Unless it's relevant to the story you're playing, I cannot be bothered to read the whole thing (though sometimes it does pay to, developers tend to put a lot of strategic hints within them if you're paying attention). To me a lot of it seems like a lot of redundant world building.

I don't spend tons of time on things like codex and journal entries, but in games like the Elder Scrolls series I read pretty much everything I come across. I just love that they actually write books, guides, and short stories for the series.
