WOULD I RECCOMEND IT!?!?!?! DOES THE POPE SHIT IN THE WOODS?! It's not as dark as 7 but as a game it is effing genius. My second favourite in the series and an absolute MUST PLAY!
Um, the answer to your pope question... NO...

Back to the topic...

I'd get IX just for the side questing and card-mini game alone!! It is an awesome game! Its a lot more charming than XIII as well! And having characters with set classes worked better for me, you still have choice over the abilities, but I preferred my characters to have a particular job, not just a bunch of empty shells in which I could do what I want!!

emo angst of 7 and 8
FFVII is not emo Cloud is just a complete prick there is a difference. Squall on the other is an emo as he thinks no one can help his problems and does everything by himself and no one gets him but he makes this work for him. Original FFVII is not emo. Cloud is however, Emoesque in Advent Children.
First off, let me state: Squall is not an emo but a military workaholic seriously look at some parts of the game. Quistis asks him to remember certain lines for protocols during certain parts of the game and he recites it to the bloody last line of the bloody paragraph and section. And how would you feel if you were the only child at an orphanage and your 'sister' happens to be taken away? Not to mention he has an odd time trusting people but learns to do so with Rinoa etc, fall in love etc.

Second of all, maybe Cloud just might be a prick but I guess its reasonable when you found out that some huge trauma caused you to completely imitate your friend to think your actually him? And well seriously Tifa? Jump on him and do something its fairly obvious.

Thirdly, they are just dark in general. It's like saying God of War is not gore, blood and nudity.
Well on the Third point yes they are dark but not that dark. They are probably the darkest of the Final Fantasies at least up their but in the grand scale of things they aren't really that bad.

First point yes Squall is a workaholic but he constantly says people should deal with their own problems and be left own. He is intrapersonal to the point where if I knew him I would recommend him to The Samaritans in case of depression. I am not saying he doesn't develop either but at the start he does have that emo emotionally unstable attitude. I also never said he didn't have a justifaction for being like that just that he was. Regardless of his past he is a bit a emo but it is justified no one can dispute it is not.

Second point once again no one can dispute Cloud's past has made him fucked up but he is still a prick and not an Emo. Although in Advent Children he is leaning that direction at the start. I am not saying it is not reasonable and he does come around at the end but at the start he is a prick.

Also you make it sound like I am saying it is bad to be emo. I don't care if someone is emo they are free to be whatever part of their subculture they want. Yes there are quite negative connotations associated with it if that is what set you off a bit by me saying Squall was emo. I did not mean it in a bad sense.

Yes. Absolutely yes! It's my favourite game of all time. The setting is beautiful, the dialogue sharp and deep, the characters interesting, grounded and easy to sympathise with. The relationships, growth and development are just amazing to watch and be a part of. The music is by far the best in the series, the combat and levelling system is simple and thoroughly enjoyable and the whole atmosphere and aesthetic of the game is just fantastic in every way

Get it. Get it now!

I didn't really care for IX all that much. It's probably my least favorite Fantasy title. But most people seem to enjoy it, which makes me the odd man out - so I say go for it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXlE8ZESSEI&feature=&p=9A658C866A4FFC04&index=0&playnext=1 <-- this is why people keep talking about the music, for those of you who never made it this far. I played 9 back when I was 10, and it was my first of the series. Once it came onto the playstation network, I was in shock. For years I had wanted to experience it again, to see and do the things that began to shape my understanding of the world. Final Fantasy 9 is a game of growth and personal courage, sacrifice and death. The very concepts that make up the world itself are outlined in ways that made more sense to me than anything else. The plot is warm and endearing and the characters are all very human and easy to relate to. It is funny, difficult, and tragic. As a story, it is unparalled. Gaming as a medium, to me, tells a story the same way a book or film will tell a story. It is the best storytelling in a game I have ever seen or ever will see. I still remember being 10 years old and seeing that crystal when it was all over and I was at the opening credits again, embedded gently as if to strike the significance of everything into my mind. Those of you that have played to completion will understand this.

I am a raving fanboy, and I am damn proud to be one. Pick up that game

If you're using a less powerful system, I'd actually recommend FF6 (FF3 American) as similar to FF7 (in that it's Steampunk). Of course, the graphics are significantly less nice due to it being a SNES game.
Woah, woah, woah wait just one cottan picking minuite, did you just claim that FFVI than VII has worse graphics simply by the virtue of it being on the SNES?!

Go to hell to be quite frank, that is the kind of graphic whoring nonsense that is ruining the games industry.

More advanced?
Sure but "nicer"?
That is pure opinion.

OT: You're not gonna get many nos you realize?
About the only people that will say no are the blind JRPG/Final Fantasy hating jerks that 9/10 never even played it.

And a possible handfull that are too shallow to look past the art style.

I generally tout FFIX as the best Final Fantasy game, closely followed by FFVI. It's an excellent title, the main character is NOT a whiny mama's boy, it's got some fun and inventive mechanics and some engaging characters who actually grow throughout the story, interesting mini-games, fun turn-based battle...do this for yourself.
