Do you smile at strangers in the street?

I grin and nod at old people, pregnant (or pram-wielding) people, or just people who seem nice. They tend to respond well.

I remember there was this old bearded bloke who used to live on my mum's street, who would go for a walk every day, and just stop and stare at the trees every now and then. Cool guy. I'd wave from my car every time I passed him, and he would always gesture back. I talked to him a couple of times bumping into him jogging, and he was a really relaxed old man. I heard he died from my mother recently, so that's really sad.

But in general, I'm a nice, productive member of society.

Yes, I do. I also wave at strangers as I drive by (assuming there's just one or two of them - I don't wave at an entire crowded sidewalk, that would be silly.) Here in East Texas, it's just what ya do.

No. I don't like smiling. I never smile, let alone to strangers. If I laugh, I smile, but that's about it.

I smile at everyone. I get good reactions 98% of the time. Additionally, I tend to strike up conversations with anyone walking in the same direction as me. It's just my personality, I'm naturally friendly.
You sound like fun! :) Although they can be awkward, this woman once started talking to me about a puddle or some shit, then we had to walk in the same direction in silence down the rest of the street.

Only when I'm greeting them or being introduced to them. Oh yeah and when a pretty girl meets my eye. And at babies, I always smile at babies :p. But never at strangers, I don't want them to think I'm laughing at them or being creepy, or say flirting with them....unless they're cute...and a girl...yeeeeaaah.

I generally don't. Smiling is awkward in general to me, especially to people I've never met.
Wow, thanks for the lesson! Here's one for you.

I once got pepper sprayed when I smiled at someone as I passed them. Can't a socially inept, 6ft+ guy in a hoody walk down the street at 10 at night anymore?

Yes, I know this is a bit of a stereotype, but I was raised in Mississippi and we smile and wave at everybody passing us by, even if you're a complete stranger.

I just glare at people while speaking in tongues. Or I just ignore them. I don't care enough about other people or what they think about me to waste my time interacting with them.

No, I trudge through places with a rather surly or indifferent expression and generally try to remain inconspicuous because I'm an incredibly paranoid and shy individual.

I smile, but I'm not so good at eye contact, especially passing eye contact with someone I don't know.

My friends mum, for 2 years smiled at this same woman every day on the way to work. After 2 years, the woman asked her to coffee and they became friends. N'yaaaw!
I've experienced something somewhat similar, actually. I took a bus to school for two years (during winters) and every morning, an elderly man who looks exactly like Robert DeNiro got on at the next stop, after mine. I thought "That's DeNiro" every time I saw him.

Then, I stopped taking the bus for a while. I walked or biked to school every morning, even during winters. A few months ago, however, I feel lazy, so I take the bus. DeNiro's there.

I get off at my stop, and for the first time ever, he gets off at the same one. I think "Now or never", and I walk up to him and say

Im sorry, but you look exactly like Robert DeNiro.

He looks at me, then says

I know.

We part, and from now on, everytime I see him, we greet eachother with a nod.

I know Robert DeNiro.

I usually "man nod" to the men, and just continue singing loudly while walking past women.

What? I walk everywhere with an iPod and I like to sing loudly....

I smile at everyone. Sometimes it gives someone enough of a boost to stop scowling :3 I've smiled at two people in particular where the little act made a big difference. One was an elderly woman, she was clearly upset and I could vaguely hear her complaining about how rude "kids these days" are. I gave her a smile, bam, she cheered right up and stopped complaining. Another was a little kid x3 Got her to stop crying with a smile.

Plus, it's a lot harder for people to be dicks to you when you smile at them.
