Do you start off slowly or do you dive right in?

Actually, your friend WAS right, but it's unlikely that you will find water that cold. However, the sudden change from cold to LITERALLY freezing can, and has been known, to cause a heart attack.

Personally, i ease in until about thigh deep, then sit down suddenly.

I assume this is mostly seawater we're talking about so i'm gonna vote neither because i hate being wet... And sand and most of all wet sand being stuck to me

Honestly fuck the beach...

Though if we're talking about swimming pools i'd usually just jump in

I ease myself in so I can get used to the water, that's only way I can ever go in cold water...

Jump right in.
Don't care if I've eaten beforehand, etcetera etcetera...
While everyone is slowly testing the water, I'm already swimming away.

Launch thyself!

Granted, in near-zero temperature waters you can die from the rapid drop in body temperature which sends suddenly-too-cold blood pumping back to your heart causing bad things, but seriously if you're going swimming in that sort of water without assistance then the social Darwinists would like a word with you.

Most water that you're allowed to swim in won't kill you from sudden exposure, so blast through the (super-invigorating) first second then get down to the swimmin'.

I usually jump right in unless I don't really want to get wet, even though "I'll just soak my feet" usually turns into "even my towel is soaked =|"

You do realize that's a silly myth, right? There's no way jumping right in after having a burger is going to make you cramp up, it's a load of shit.
Its filed under "if shingles meet at your stomach you will die" in my brain, I still wont jump in the sea straight after eating.

Its got nothing to do with whether I believe the urban myth, more to do with I just don't do it out of habit.

If I was a professional swimmer then I'd need to eat a huge amount of food before "racing" because I need the sustenance. I'm not a pro swimmer, I'm just a dude that doesn't jump in the sea after eating.

edit, whoops, sorry dude for fucking it up!.

I hesitantly jump in.
That is, I dip my feet for a bit before jumping into the water and frowning with regret.

I just jump on in and worry about the rest as I'm freezing my ass off under water.
Ummm....your avatar....

OT:

It depends on what kind of mood I'm in. I usually just jump in though. I love the feeling of shock from the temperature change.

Is it wrong that I came into this thread thinking something completely different?

[sub]Came into...[/sub]
I came here with the same intentions.

OT: Run in and get it over with. Try and scream something like "I regret nothing" or "This is SPARTAAAAAA!"
