Do you still enjoy games

I'm currently going through a phase of revisiting the old games I used to love... I'm only 24 but am getting bored with a lot of the modern selection (although highly looking forward to fallout 3, hoping its better than oblivion). So far I've busted out MOO 2, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Starcon2, Lands of Lore 1, old wing commander games, Planescape... I've never played the original Fallout games so I just ordered them both from amazon for $15, I'm a big fan of games with a great storyline, so I'm hoping even if the graphics are a bit outdated (which I'm thinking shouldn't bother me if I'm playing Lands of Lore), the story should make it worthwhile and fun.

I enjoy gaming. I don't enjoy the gaming community as much as I once did, as gulping Haterade and spewing it up seems to have replaced actual discussion, but the games themselves (or those I tend to buy, anyway) are just as enjoyable as in years past.

I think the key is to be selective when purchasing; buying "x" because everyone else is or because it's part IV of the "y" series is begging for heartbreak, whereas buying "x" because you really want to play "x" is more likely to be pleasant. Also, it's easier to become jaded if you're buying games in bulk.

I also think that damping down the "kid in Santa's lap" syndrome is a big help; easily half the complaints about '"z" was overhyped' stem from unskeptical reading of rumours and overheated fan speculation.

I grew up playing adventure games and enjoying a good interactive story. As PC gaming went in different directions I kinda humored them for a while and did other genres but...these days the only games that really interest me anymore are again, ones with good stories. The rest of it, as someone up above said, has all been done before to me.

Needless to say, finding games with great stories involves a bit of digging and I mostly find myself playing older games. After all the hype and gameplay fans wander off, maybe a year or so, people will still be chirping about a game's plot. That's when I pick it up.

Enjoying 'Gun' at the moment, in case you're wondering.

I definitely don't enjoy games as much as I did when I was younger, especially "hardcore" ones. I don't have as much free time now, so if a game isn't rocking my world, I feel ripped off. I have a greater appreciation for games such as Katamari Damacy and Smash Brothers that are just quick, silly fun rather than infuriating nonsense such as Ninja Gaiden or dungeon crawl RPG's.

Yay Video Games! You can't stop my love of them.
I only play the games I choose to like, and Yahtzee for me, simply parody's what little knowledge I have of a peticular game.

I still cannot wait for Spore.

I still enjoy games quite a bit. I just get mad at the current trend of developing half a game and selling it for full price. Halo 2, Halo 2.5 and COD 4 are currently in my cross-hairs of scorn for jumping the shark. However, I did have a great time playing the COD4 single player mode. A little easy but fun. Then there is Crysis, hands down the game of the year. OK story, the best AI I have seen and the game has tremendous replay value. I thought this past fall was one of the best times for games in memory.

The reason games are continually trashed here is because a lot of the new users coming here feel the need to mindlessly parrot everything Yahtzee says. Since they don't have anything even remotely interesting to say on the topic, they just cling to Yahtzee in a desperate attempt to appear cool.

For instance, did you know that liking any game ever released by Nintendo makes you a fanboy? Did you know that liking Japanese RPGs makes you a weeaboo? Did you know that nobody owns an Xbox 360 for any other reason than to play Halo 3 with a lot of screaming twelve-year-olds online?

Preach it. And what of those nerdy PC RPG gamers with their OCD? Or those PS3 gamers who are...wait what does yahtzee say about them?

Meh, I'd rather take intelligent criticism than fanboy antics. The ZP thread for Smash Brothers is over 600. Have you skimmed through it? It's an embarrassment to anyone trying to claim video games are played by mature, rational people.

Honestly...just when you think people would have developed the comprehension that the guy trashes everything they suddenly get their hopes up that Brawl is going to be different. And for what? I loved 'The Darkness' but I don't give two shits about Yahtzee's bitching about it. It's just...frustrating.

At this point, the Halo fans were more mature than the Brawl fans when they had their game roasted.

I played UT when it first came it, and I was a tournament player. Then along came Counter Strike and I started playing but retired after my university took over. When I came back, I had played it to acquire the level I had lost. Needless to say, I never did, and I also stopped having fun with it, it was like a permanent competition. I still go in every now and then to a pub, but I get out, not out of boredom, but cause I get 0wn3d in a apocrifal way.
Right now I have fun playing multiplayer games on my Wii, Cube or XBox. I play with friends, family or online if possible, and preferably on games you can actually have fun even if you're butterfingers. I do have fun on Halo even when I'm losing, and also try messing up on Smash if Im just beating everyone up without competition. I think getting competitive can take the fun out of some games, specially when you NEVER play any tournaments.

Personally I really enjoy at least 4 or 5 games released every year and I don't give a crap what a bunch of nerdy dorks have to say about everything sucking, and if you think games were better in the SNES era you are a retard.

First and final warning, leave name-calling on other sites.

I did indeed suffer through that comments thread. Did you miss the part where well over half of the comments in that thread were agreeing with Yahtzee?

The ones who agree with him no matter what he says are just as bad as the ones arguing because he said something bad about their favorite game. They might as well be the same thing. But yeah, I'm sure a lot of people are happy to find outlet too. Nothing worth getting too worked up about.

My point was, that thread did nothing to shake my conviction that people who HATE Brawl talk about it much, much more than people who love it.

EDIT: Oh, and by the way, my gripe wasn't really with people who agree with Yahtzee, my gripe was with people who quote one-liners from his videos word for word as a cheap substitute for making any actual points of their own. I apparently am a Nintendo fanboy because I think that if these idiots can't back up their opinions, they shouldn't rely on Yahtzee to do it for them. When we have fine specimens like this fellow, who posted in the Turok comments thread:

Nice review, but what I'd really like to say thanks for is what you said about jrpgs in the Super Paper Mario and Mass Effect reviews!
I got the chance to use them in an argument with a final fantasy fan and it worked great.
The little brat actually shut her Sepiroth kissing mouth up!
and the guy who in the Brawl thread said something along the lines of "when I tell my friends I don't like smash bros. they just roll their eyes and sigh, now all I have to do is link them to this video and they'll shut up! thanks Yahtzee!" (I can't find the exact post and don't care to sift through that thread again so forgive me if I can't identify him),

...I think you get my meaning.

Ah, another intelligent, meaningful post from a new user to the forum. Oh how I love the foolishness of this forum is graced with an intellect such as yours, telling all us 'nerdy dorks' how wrong we are with eloquence and wit. You know, if this forum was full of people like you, it would be a much, much better place. Seriously, you are the pinnacle of gamerkind and I am SO glad to have been blessed by your presence.

Or...

Piss off until you've got something sensible to say, dumbass.

I love Halo

id only feel safe saying that here on escapist, i say i love the gameplay, someone rotes off the 'been done before' spiel i say i love the music, there's always someone with a 'witty' response, i say i like anything i can guarantee 90% of the time there will be retribution

the worst part is, the moment i try to defend it, i become a fanboy, and the moment i get slightly passionate about it, or even bite to anothers flame, i become 'that Halo troll' and everyone can immediately dismiss my opinions. Everyone is an expert on everything wrong with the Halo games, and is certain that this allows them to discredit all its pros, especially on its hype (its not even a gameplay aspect! why mark down a game on hype?)

sorry for the outburst, but it seemed the opportune time
I like Halo too, so we stand together. I also like Half-Life and I don't see why you can't like both. Yes, the visual design of Halo makes everything look like moving plastic action figures--but I like action figures, so this is not a problem. Half-Life is much more cinematic in it's look. Yay for Half-Life, love that too! I don't see why people insist on comparing them when to me they are as different as an animated movie vs. a live action movie.

Now, this is just a thought but--would people be a little less jaded with video games if they played them less? I actually allocate time to play, but I also allocate time to write, and time to watch TV, and time to read, and time to knit. Everything becomes less fun if you have too much of it. I love cheesecake and it comes in just about every flavor you could want, but if I ate it every damn day, it would all start to taste the same and I wouldn't like it nearly so much.

Yes If you are one of those people that think everything sucks now and can't possibly be as good as the glorius heyday of videogames that was the 16 bit era then you are a nerdy dork I hate to break it to you, but it's true. And yes if this forum had more people like me in it rather than the nerd/dork pack mentality that rip on Halo 3 because it isn't Half Life or some such dumb logic then it would be a better place. I'm sorry if I hurt your tender feelings with my choice of words, and try to get some sun the light in your mom's basement isn't good for your complexion.

While I certainly agree with this sentiment, some people are just critical and opinionated by nature. I have a friend who, while he doesn't solely video game every night, all night, complains and critiques games very heavily. To the point that which the OP might be lamenting about, actually.

Thing is, he does that with everything. It's just his nature. And I'm betting that there are other people like him. Best thing to do with people like this if their opinions start grating on you is change the subject, or just walk away.
