you have to think like this, he is a reviewer, who has his own opinion that is no one elses but his. You have your opinion, and they may clash, and sometimes people just dont get that.

His description of games is often accurate, but the opinions he forms are not always valid. Ignore him when he says a game sucks, but listen when he says why it sucks, then make your own decision.

Sure I do. They have to be funny and generally the only way that they will be is by magnifying the absurd and stretching it over the course of three or four minutes.

Having said that, he is right about a lot of things in the same way that Jon Stewart occasionally hits upon an insight into the political process. Yet his pet biases (against Space Marines) and his (professional, of course) unwillingness to play games from different perspectives inevitably influence the reviews.

Yahtzee puts out a comedy show every week, they aren't really what I would consider reviews.

He is a critic, not a reviewer. Learn the difference.
This is pretty much the long and the short of it.

A grain of salt is putting it mildly. You have to watch Yatzees reviews while chatting with Lot's wife. Yahtzee does not review game in any meaningful sense of the word. Rather, he is a single gamer, with particularly unusual, arcane, and cynical tastes, prone to hate everything, who makes every possible effort to insult a game he is criticizing in his review. He does have some interesting points, but I dare say that his opinion is relevant to gamers, as a whole, less often then the average gamer. When he does have a point, there are often a ton of considerations that need to be made to really come to a useful conclusion. However, there are 2 very important things to remember. 1, any opinion is worth hearing in the process of game design. If someone thinks it, then its worth considering, because someone else probably thinks it too. Maybe that opinion won't (And shouldn't) change an individual game, but maybe another game will come along which does take it into account, adding more variety to the genre. Second, Yahtzee is eloquent and hilarious in his presentation of his opinions. And that's all that he needs to be. Personally, it would be nice if Yahtzee at least paid lip service to the fact that if you enjoy something, you shouldn't let someone else tell you that you suck for enjoying something so subpar, because hes starting to come of ever so slightly like a Fanboy who only has a hating side. But I still enjoy Yahtzee, and will continue to watch him every week.

To quote Yahtzee from his video Mailbag Showdown, "All reviews are subject to personal opinion, and if you personally enjoy the game, then they really shouldn't get to you."
And of course people ignore this and instead make countless topics on whether or not he's a "real" reviewer or if he's supposed to be taken seriously. But hey, what can ya do?

There are parts that are serious, and parts that are exaggeration, and parts that are him having a fanwank contest. His analogies and depictions are usually pretty fair, and well thought out, so there's at least that aspect that goes beyond the comedy. Though that we are willingly listening to the rantings of a man and expecting a review is only a blind on our part--I take more information from when he's speaking in Extra Punctuation, as he can elaborate without having to be funny. Apart from a few personal gripes that occasionally come up, for the most part he nominally stays at the objective end of the subjective side. He has a bit of an issue of broadcasting things that he personally cannot stand, but otherwise he does clearly nail the annoying and tedious parts of the games.

I find I agree with a few things he said, and others that I don't, but in any case, I watch it because it's entertaining, he made me play games out of curiosity, but he never stopped me from playing a game I wanted to play, though I did not played those games he destroyed and I was doubtful but were crap.

It's just for the sake of the lulz =)

Actually, I do listen to what Yahtzee has to say. I don't have much time on my hands to play very many games, so what games I do play I would very much like to be superior experiences. Portal and Psychonauts were both amazing and only occasionally frustrating, and I really enjoyed them. Likewise, I enjoyed Assassin's Creed 2, even if he only gave that one a middling endorsement. Three's a trend, and the logic of "If he really likes it, then I'll like it too" hasn't let me down yet.

I just see them as humorous commentaries on the bad parts of games.

"Review" implies you at least sometimes have something nice to say.

at the end of the day your allwasy going to have a disacreement with a reviewist

(A lot of bull about Wet and Darkest Days . . .)

i think that you need to keep your own oppinion, dont be afraid to try new games and dont let your oppinion be changed by somone else
I'm sorry, I usually try to not be too grammar nazi-ish, but this is just disgusting.
I don't think you allwasy have to have a disacreement with a reviewist. BECAUSE NONE OF THOSE ARE WORDS!
It's always, not allwasy, disagreement, not disacreement, and what the fuck is a reviewist? IT'S REVIEWER, GODDAMMIT!
Also, I would never let my oppinion be changed by somone else.
Because it's opinion. AND SOMEONE!
In conclusion, LEARN TO TALK.

I think HE takes them with a grain of salt. Having said that, I've only ever disagreed with him on FarCry2 and Mass Effect.

Of coarse! (See what I did there? Coarse? Salt? Never mind.)
I frequently disagree with Yahtzee (I love JRPGs, my only current-gen is a Wii, enjoy Brawl etc.) but I find him amusing anyway. In my experience, if he says a game is good, then there's a pretty good chance that I'm going to like it. If he says it's bad, there's a fairly good chance I won't like it, but it's not as likely as for a good game.
EVERY reviewer or critic should be taken lightly.

Surely Yahtzee's reviews ARE the pinch of salt to be taken with a game's hype?
Very much agreed, however the Rabid Fanboi'ism that goes along with Zero Punctuation would have you believe that like Valve, Yahtzee pisses honey and shits gold, that his words are those spoken by the one true gamer god and that any whom disagree with his saintly words shall burn forever in the pits of gamer hell.

But you hit the nail on the head, ZP is the Anti Hype machine, but many times certain things are exaggerated to achieve that goal. Thus negating the fair and unbiased "Review" aspect.

I started watching ZP when it had only really kicked off on The Escapist and have faithfully watched every one since. I often watch them again as they are very funny to listen to and visually too.

I'm not a huge gamer (I'm working on it!) and only own two of the games he's reviewed, I find he's generally on the money. As a huge fan of Ghostbusters I was eagerly anticipating the game and was somewhat worried when his review for it was less than complimentary. Turns out he was spot-on - Ghostbusters was poor and I have since sold it on eBay for around a tenth of what I paid for it...and I still feel like the buyer was the one getting ripped off.

Yeah OK he can be extreme at times but as he himself has pointed out, people seem to prefer it when he rips a game to shreds, possibly so they have a reason to write hate mail.

At the end of the day though, I watch for the amusement.
