Does Planetside 2 actually have gear stats, leveling up and role playing? /curious
It was to my understanding that it was an MMO, but not an RPG.
Yeah, in the Battlefield or Call of Duty way. The more you level up, you gain more certification points, which are used to buy either better weapons, accessories, level up the classes abilities, and buy weapons for the vehicles.
Hmm, so... Some RPG elements, without the actual Role Playing?

There should be a term for such a thing. Now that you mention it that kind of thing has become common in a lot of multiplayer games of late. PseudoRPG? Multiplayer Leveling Game(MLG)?

It's already been done. Planetside 2.

Three huge maps, each divided into territories that are fought over by three somewhat distinct completely player-driven factions. Infantry, AFVs, tank and aircraft. Think Battlefield, make it 10x as big, but without the fancy visuals and sound.

Pretty much the only MMO to ever get and held my attention.
Mate, if you think Planetside 2 was awesome, please tell me you played Planetside 1 at least once.

It's probably barren now that 2 has come out... but damn, Planetside 1 is easily one of my favourite shooters and MMOs of all time. It may not have the greatest "shooting" or graphics, but the gameplay was literally the most fun anyone can have.

The one thing I didn't like about Planetside 2 (well, this and the download size which has kind of turned me off playing more) is how it seems a lot more, well, "Match-y" than 1. You loaded in and joined a "match" rather than working with your faction to form a supply line of vehicles and transports. Which leaves chances for the enemy to ambush this line. Which gives the Outriders on bikes and such a job. See, in 1 you had people running scouts and such, you had the factions forming war parties (seriously, if you haven't seen a field nearby a base swarming with cargo-ships dropping vehicles off, with MECs setting up, soldiers running in between and then the order to go... Damn.)

It really shows that the greatest fun out of that game is to be a tiny part of the faction. When I buzz someone in my Mossie or Reaver and see an infantry squad take out the Anti-Air mec troubling me as our tanks advance and destroy their gate defence whilst my wing-men form up and take out the enemy scrambling to get in the air... Ah, fun.

OT:

So yeah, Planetside. 1 and 2. And shit. Now you've made me want to download Planetside 2. Damnit Zhukov. I'm a bit iffy though, not sure if it still has the playerbase.

Nah, never played PS1, so I can't compare the two.

Not sure what you mean by "match-y". The game isn't divided into matches. The servers and maps are persistent.

But yeah, I've tasted the awesomeness of pre-battle set ups. My favourites are at the start of an alert when you get squads - both organized and not - loading up into galaxy transports, then you see a fleet of galaxies with fighter escorts and the occasional bomber leaving the warpgate.

(Transports can't carry vehicles in PS2 for balance reasons, and MECs no longer exist, although I've heard rumours they may get added.)

Not sure exactly what war parties were. These days we have squads (up to 12 men) and platoons (up to 4 squads), which are groups of players with their own in-game comm channel and command aids like waypoints, smoke signals and spawn beacons. There are outfits, which are basically clans. (RSNC represent!) These groups vary on level of organization depending on the people involved, from barely contained chaos to the crazy elite. Then we have what we call the zerg(s). These are masses of non-aligned players charging about in mostly disorganizaed groups, with maybe some leadership going on in proxy comms.

Player base is... alright. Obviously it's shrunk a lot since the post-launch boom. I play on the Asia/Oceania server and we can still get 100vs100 battles going during prime time and alerts. Not sure what the EU or US servers are like.
