Cripes, I wish I didn't know what Rapelay was.

There are some pretty decent anime games out there (the new Naruto and a few of the Gundam or Dragonball games aren't terrible; not good enough to buy, but they're not worthless). And there are mature ones (too bad the Berserk game never made it to our shores).

I feel like I say this a lot, but anime really isn't all for children. Shonen is for teenagers, but there's also seinen and josei which are by their very definition contain more mature ideas. Some anime has more blood and titties than any 'real' movie I can think of, if that's how you define mature.

I'm gonna give my answer for both possible definitions:

Game adaptations of anime series: I tend to avoid them for the same reason I avoid move-based games. I've heard good things about the GBA Astro Boy game, though.

Games with an "anime style": On the other hand, I rather like these and prefer them to realistic games. Valkyria Chronicles is beautiful, Tales of Symphonia looks pretty nice, and Disgaea is wonderfully colorful, to cite three examples.

How are anime games as a whole childish? Yes, some (not all) feature young characters, but that doesn't mean the game itself is necessarily a kids game.
My thoughts exactly, Zero.

Seriously, many extremely violent anime contain youngsters, but you'll traumatize your kids if you show them that...

I'd play an Elfen Lied game.
Hard to believe they never made a video game about young naked women brutally slicing off people's limbs and heads.

I love the show, but there is no way in hell that game would ever make it out of Japan.

As has been noted above, a clearer definition of "anime game" would be appreciated. Licensed games of anime series? (Often) Games with an anime/manga aesthetic? (On occasion) Japanese games in general? (DANGER: SWEEPING GENERALIZATION DETECTED)

In any case, art style and maturity level can be mutually exclusive. For example, Eversion has a cartoon flower as a protagonist, but is a haunting tale of terror and peering beyond the veil of what man was meant to know. Cave Story is clearly stylized with an anime aesthetic, but offers death, questions of identity and loyalty, and an overarching theme of corruption and redemption. By contrast, Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard has a grim-and-gritty, realistic art style, but is bloodless, tongue-in-cheek, and totally devoid of a fourth wall. In a word, it is silly.

No, often times they are deeper than the mainstream, realistic, gritty game.

I know they arent, I really do. I know a lot of them are really deep, and some are really good mature games...

But I find it impossible to take a game seriously if its done in anime-style graphics... Thats just the way it is.

No.
Okami, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and Zelda draw heavily from anime styles and those games have fairly mature storylines (except maybe Bayonetta)

The common thread here seems to be issues with what you mean by an 'anime' game.

However, I think that the idea of classifying a game due to art style is idiotic. You may as well classify it by what style of music the game uses for it's soundtrack.

Play games you find fun. If other people think it's childish, forget them. You don't need to justify yourself for enjoying video games anymore than other people have to for liking sports, cars, or guns. In the end, video games are a hobby, like any other.

That said, I do play games with an anime aesthetic. Hell, you can probably tell that by my user icon. I've beaten every translated SMT game, every windows Touhou game, played Ar Tonelico 1 and 2, Atelier Iris, and Mana Khemia 1 and 2. I've also beaten Serious Sam at least a dozen times, beaten Doom 1 and 2 on Ultra Violence, loved the hell out of Modern Warfare 1, and am currently playing God of War 3 on Titan. Not bragging(okay, a little on some of it), but frankly, in the end, they are *games*. It is a hobby. If you are ashamed of or childish for buying games because of an 'anime' aesthetic, don't buy them or get over it.

You know what else has young characters? The Path. Isn't anime just an art style? Isn't that a bit like saying TF2 is a cartoon game?

I'll be praying with you.Elfen Lied is fucking awesome,no matter what people say about it.

OT:Well I am looked on as a child by most parts of society. And If I am not allowed to enjoy any game that I want, then this is not the hobby for me.

Do you people not think he is referring to games based off anime series that you see off the telly, rather than just... japanese games?

Coz he's (sorta) right in that sense, Avatar for the Xbox was balls.
