I've been thinking, what is the point to first sending movies to theaters and then after it has run its course releasing it to dvd and other distribution methods. Why not release it through online streaming methods immediately when it is done.Would you not watch a movie if it solely came out in this format? I don't think so. So what do you think?

There's something special about meeting with friends and/or family to watch a movie at the theaters. Plus a single ticket (assuming you're just buying it for yourself) is not really expensive. At least where I live.

No, it will just change...for the worst.

I think the whole 3D thing is a bad omen that we will be in a slump for a while if the best they can think of is jabbing things at the screen and saying "Oooh...aaahh it's 3D"

I don't think that movie theaters are in any danger of becoming irrelevant. Going to the movies is still fun.

Seeing the movie on a 6 story screen has an appeal. not to mention the sound system. It's more of a "Cinematic Experience" then anything. They release it later because it gets them more money and the people who liked it enough to buy it will.
True but these days televisions and stereo systems are getting cheaper and in regards to the televisions larger. You can create the same cinematic experience at home with enough cash. Anyway if you want the cinematic experience only a theater can give you ( and don't want to spend the money on a home theater system) then go to a theater, but why the need to give theaters an exclusive ability to show movies, why not allow direct streaming from the internet in congruence with the theater?

The thing is, Theaters sell an experience, they're not just an avenue to see a movie. There's something incomparable about the atmosphere in a movie theater, that I think will be hard to replicate on personal, home basis.

MONEY MONEY!

If they did that someone would learn how to hack the stream and the movies would be free release from day one. Until like 70% of the population has enough money for home theatre systems they will still make money off of movies. And the reason why they don't just release it straight to DVD is because it's cheaper. If you see a movie in the theatre without buying to much you can see it for 12.75 here. Blu Ray Dvds here cost 25-35 dollars here. thats a big Diff. Plus not every has 3D so that's another thing.
Concerning the streaming thing...

Pirates are already doing this after recording in the theaters. If you wanted to you could watch Green Lantern online right now.

well somtimes It seems pointless If I can get a really good movie for like $10 on DVD but theatre ticket is almost $20

I will see a movie in a theatre ONLY if I really want to, I mean the experience can be awsome

most of the time theres nothing out that I want to see that badly, I mean who thourght up the Idea that New release=better?

Theaters still have plenty of life in the big cities, but the collapse of the periphery is already well underway. The ones left in my area are barely hanging on.

Really, the "theater as experience" is in sharp decline as the remaining theaters try desperately to save money by cutting expenses even as they are expected to invest in expensive 3D projectors and other gimmicks. The studios need the theaters less and less these days, allowing them to bargain harder and reduce theater revenue even more.

Fewer people are going. When's the last time you saw a full theater that wasn't a midnight showing? Even half full? I've watched movies by myself at times. That's not good.

I won't say they're doomed, but these are very dark times for the theater industry.

I dunno when did x-men first class come out? I saw it at like 6:00 on the afternoon the Saturday it came out, theater was so full that the manager told people to scoot over and fill the empty... stranger space.

Though I live in a city of like 600,000 so yeah..

It's headed in a really bad direction with the whole "3D" gimmick. People need to realize the 3D isn't even good and definitely not worth the 4 or 5 extra dollars.

Never. There's just something that truly allows the word "Epic" to be used about a movie theatre.

If only they'd understand that we don't want to pay for all the damn thrills.

I don't think so. I think there will always be an appeal for the movie theatres.
I personally like to go because it makes films more of a social thing, getting together with friends in the city and going out for dinner afterwards.
Plus, no matter how big your television is, it will never match the mighty power of the 16ft movie screen, and the sound system that makes the walls shake in action movies.

Me and a large group of friends go to see every premier at the local theater. We couldn't do that at someone's house. There may be less theaters in the future, but there will still be some.
