Do you think spiders would be scary if they had less legs?

Surprisingly, I have a definitive answer to this question: No.

I once saw a spider on my wall that appeared to only have 4 legs. It scared me far more than any "normal" spider I'd ever seen.

Turns out it just had it's legs together. I guess even spiders have a sense of decency.

I like spiders and I hate killing them unless they're poisonous. Having a spider or two in your home is like free pest control.

For me, yes. Of course, it depends on the size of the spider. But I'm scared of ant-sized spiders and not of ants.
Actually, as a kid, my worst nightmare (no horror movie has ever come close to that) was when I heard of a type of spider that disguises as an ant by putting its two front legs as "antennas".
I'm not sure how it can fool other ants, but the sheer idea terrified me. Thinking I could have an ant on me, not thinking about it, and then it would put its "antennas" down and "become" a spider.. Sheer horror, I tell you.

Of course, people aren't all afraid of the same things. Some are afraid only of the big spiders, so size matters more than number of legs to them. Some are afraid of the hairy ones, so that's probably what scares them. Some people mentioned the eyes, although spiders have various amount of eyes depending on species, so it's not constant among spiders either. Some people are also afraid of the long legs, and might be afraid of insects who, despite having only 6 legs, have them just as long as some spiders.

I am not scared of "spiders" portrayed with six or four legs. I've fought them as bosses and not even thought of them as spiders until people told me they were supposed to be. So for me, the number of legs is definitely the main thing.

they have eight legs, but so do scorpions and I like scorpions not scared of them at all.
Scorpions also have claws though. They also have a tail that could be interpreted by our brain as an extra appendage as well, differentiating them from spiders. I'm not afraid of scorpions, either, for the record.

Most of the time, I'm terrified by spiders at first sight. But sometimes, especially with the tiny ones, there is some sort of doubt. When I count the legs, the doubt can turn into relief or sheer panic depending if the answer is 6 or 8. So yeah, as far as I'm concerned, it's the number of legs. Couldn't tell you why, but that does it for me.
This being said, other animals photoshopped to have eight legs (for instance a cat) don't scare me if the legs are still cat legs (so going under the body rather than up to the sides then down). If the photoshop is with spider-like legs though, it does terrify me, even if it's otherwise a kitty or a puppy or whatever.

Weird thing: I'm still scared of spiders when I only see them partially, provided they're recognizable as spiders. So I guess I would be scared if I only saw part of a 4-legged "spider" boss in a way that didn't allow me to guess it doesn't have 8 legs. Picture of faces of spiders don't terrify me, they only scare me because I know it's a spider and I picture the rest of it.

The fear is instinctual from my understanding. So I don't see the difference in the number of legs.

Well when we consider the fact that my seven legged tarantula still scares the shit out of some of my friends.
Why does that make it more scary to me?

I really like spiders for all the good work they do keeping the insect population low and such. Although there's only chibi spiders in Ireland, non venomous and lovely in every regard.

yes. they also need to be slower and larger. i'm a massive arachnophobe, but i'm ok with being near tarantulas and seeing them under laser-microscopes.
Yeah same goes for me strange that bigger spiders bother me less...maybe because they're easier to avoid...

Because we are taught to fear spiders. Or rather I'll let scientisty people explain it: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07066/767306-32.stm

But is this horror of cobras and tarantulas something we have learned, or something we're born with?

The answer seems to be both.

Infant research being done at Carnegie Mellon University suggests that babies are born with a tendency to pay more attention to the shapes of snakes and spiders than to other kinds of creatures, but that they don't fear them until an adult teaches them to.

I personally find spiders to be adorable. I'll go out of my way to save a spider from being crushed so I let it outside. This has been quite annoying to my high school teachers. Life should not be thrown away.

The one exception is toxic spiders. I'll kill those, since they can severely harm us.

I love spiders.
Sure, they fucking creep me out and are moving in a disgusting way, but for some reason I just love them.
I save spiders sometimes.
I let them crawl and chill on my hand.

And some day, I will get bitten and have spidey senses.
Yeah.

Yeah.
Jumping spiders are awesome.

But I prefer bigger myself.

Like the goliath bird eater.

So big and fluffy.

They would still be scary, just with less legs. For me, it's the eyes that frighten me the most about them. Those eight, black, staring eyes... *shivers*

The legs aren't whats scary, it's the idea of something 1/25 my size able to kill me with a bite.

Let me put it this way-

If they had fewer legs, they could have two legs.
Then we would have a spider THAT WALKS LIKE A MAN.

'Nuff said.

Wimps. I kid.

However spiders don't irk me and my missus finds them cute (I don't know) so I'd not really know, but I asked a friend and she said a floating spider would scare her more because it can fly I assume she means a spider with no legs, but hey.

I have good news for you: The chances of that happening, even if you do get bitten, are extremely small, unless you're frail of health in some way, and even then it's not likely to kill you.
