Do you think The Old Republic MMO will be a financial success?

I think it will be a financial success but I don't know if it'll be a critical success, it seems very much like WoW which really is not a good thing.

As I understand it, TOR doesn't have much of a raiding end game like hardcore MMO games do, so it won't likely dethrone WoW, since those are different kinds of players. Is that accurate? No 10/20 player raid in the end game?

Instead, it might attract a different kind of player. If that's the case, I wouldn't be targeting hardcore MMO players for TOR.

WoW didn't have that much endgame when it first came out. All that stuff will come with time.
Also calling TOR a WoW clone then saying it will fail because of it is ridiculous. At least play more than an hour or two of the game before judging it... sheesh.

They said they are going to ship with at least one (i think?) raid for 8/16 players. Though the info is very limited about end game stuff, like it's not really there.

There are a LOT of Star Wars fans.

It's gonna be a success, no doubt. But in terms of whether it will kick WoW from the top seat remains to be seen.
Ha! Unseat WoW? It will not do that, at least not until WoW degrades a bit more for a couple years.
Though I do agree that it will be successful.
I mean come on guys, it's Star Wars. They always have fans. Always.
And it's Bioware. Freaking Bioware Star Wars MMO.
That's like coating a solid gold brick in platinum, then selling it for five dollars and giving blowjobs for all paying customers.

If ALL the fans are fanatically devoted to "Bioware + Star Wars", then sure, but I doubt it. Not many players will stick to it for more than 2 months, if the gameplay is crappy (and it will most certainly be). I doubt they are going to continue playing (and paying), despite their boredom, just because it's Bioware.

i...honestly doubt it. especially since it has a monthly fee...why cant mmos stop with monthly fees?
Guild wars 2 on the other hand looks like it will blow our damn minds.

It will suck based on... what exactly?

I've not heard of a single beta player complaining about it, but oh so many people going off and speculating how bad it WILL be based on a handful of videos that Bioware released.

It's too soon to say anything about TOR definitively before it comes out, considering only a small portion of people have ever actually seen the real gameplay in action (beta players). And even then, they will still be working out bugs, adding new features and molding others to fit a more enjoyable experience, and whatnot to make it the best they can before December 2011.

Also, obligatory "Guild Wars 2 will own every MMO when it comes out, either way".

And i haven't heard someone actually praising it (except whatshisname from Penny Arcade), they say it's boring, repetitive and just plain bad. I am going to play it as well (I hope there is a trial), so i'm not being biased here ;d

To be fair, i think it will be a moderate success. Its got the Star Wars name attached to it and it's made by bioware. Theres too many fans of both for it not to make money, however i dont think it'll rake in alot of profit upon release, give it a few months (After how much money they've invested) and they'll start to recoup. After that its in their hands how long it lasts.

That's weird because everyone I know who is involved with the beta loves it and have almost no complaints about it

I have no doubt they wont take a financial loss on the game, but who can say how much they'll end up making on it. I'm fairly certain they'll make back the development costs just in box sales, and with just a couple million subscriptions per year it will be profitable.
1. Development costs do not stop after launch.

2. A couple million per year is an incredibly large number. After the initial influx of players from launch, it is incredibly difficult to hold more than a few hundred thousand players in a pay to play MMO (esp with how much F2P is taking over).

Don't assume that because WoW has 12 million that getting a couple million is not an absurd goal.
1. Actually yes they do because the game is no longer in development (although I do know what you are talking about)

2. Final Fantasy XI has 500,000 subscriptions, and that is widely regarded as a shity game, Guild Wars has 6 million subscriptions (yes I know it's F2P) and saying that F2P is taking over is like saying that apple app games are going to replace the consoles, it is complete untrue because P2P is always going to be able to deliver a better experience

Lets be honest with ourselves, if this game bombs, mmo's, screw that, gaming as we know it will take a major hit. People will be less inclined to put a lot of money into developing games, so I don't know if it's going to be a success, but, I pray to God it fucking is.

I've seen several QA from the developers of TOR and It REALLY, REALLY doesn't sound like a reskinned world of warcraft.

Development continues after release though for an MMO (and even for most non-mmo's these days too).

Also Guild Wars does not have 6 million subscribers. It has 6 million box sales, and this INCLUDES the numerous expansions (3? i think). This would mean its closer to probably 2 mil. Additionally, these numbers are of people who have EVER bought the game. We have no idea how many people currently actively play the game. It could be 100% of them, or it could be 1% of them. Chances are the number is close to a couple hundred thousand absolute max.

http://www.slashgear.com/guild-wars-hits-5-million-subscribers-2710470/
and that was in 2008 it stands to reason that the subscription went up or at least stayed at 5 mil
