Depends on the game. Think what Gears of War would be like without it's over the top gore? Better yet, play it with the gore off and see how boring it becomes. Sometimes the gore makes the game. Gore for the sake of gore is fine in my book, so is gore for the sake of realism, so long as it fits in the game.

EDIT: Wow, so much hate on Splatterhouse now that he's "reviewed" it...
/sigh
I am agreeing with you 100%.

FO3 and NV never looked real with their dismemberment when shot so you almost have to take Bloody Mess in order to make it laughable instead of sad. And the lack of any gore is more bothersome than too much.

PS: He does that to a lot of people on this site. There is also a growing trend of regurgitating information from a bonus group as well.

There was gore in L4D2?

Oh right, goddamn you Australian Government...

The abscence of gore and the disappaearance of bodies pretty much as they hit the ground, and quite often as soon as you shot them, really broke the game. So I think L4D2 shows that you do need some level of it to be believable.

However, it does depend on the genre or setting. One thing I noticed, and I'm not sure if it was designed that way or just coincidence, but in Black Ops when you get the dragon breath shotgun in Vietnam, you blow legs off and watch them scream in pain and grab at their stumps. I found that level of gore only ever occured in the Vietnam levels. It was a horrific war with some pretty horrible weapons, so it really fit the theme well and made you feel kind of bad for causing it. If it had been in one of the other settings then I think it just would not have seemed right. I did often waste bullets just coz the screaming was making me feel bad. And I'm the type of guy who loves Saw movies and gory horror.

I tend to agree with the OP.

If used properly it can enhance my immersion in a game with a sense of realism.

But then there's other games (see: Splatterhouse) in which the gore is a selling point. This, to me, just feels like an immature and juvenile gimmick to attract the only people who would buy a game just to see blood (see: 12-15 year old boys and the socially retarded
Or because some of us want to sit back and enjoy some senseless violence just for the hell of it.
And thank you for illustrating my point

Then yes, gore or blood or both are necessary. Otherwise, meh.
I enjoy Lost Planet 2 everyday, a shooter, and it has no blood or gore. I think it would take away from the somewhat cartoony and silly online battles if there was blood or gore. Knocking someone away with a grenade and watching them dramatically and sketchily ragdoll into the air is very enjoyable. But if there was gore, the body was most likely be blown away, and instead of me laughing and watching my opponent fly away, I would more then likely move on without a second glance.

It wouldn't fit.

It exceeds at bringing out the immature side of us, so I therefore believe that it does add to a game, as the next line shows:

"Fucking DIE zombies (attacks with MG and zombies splatter everywhere), wahoo, fuck yeah" (etc.)

Just makes everything so much more entertaining..

Some games, yes.

Others, no.
Pretty much this. Yes it really is that simple. If you're going for dark and gritty or with lots of intense action involving weapons, then yes. If you want something more laid back (I'm not sure how to describe this, so I'll just say Mario like), then no.

Games are alright without excessive gore, but whenever i VATS someone with a shotgun in Fallout and I can see every little piece of their cranial anatomy go flying in every direction, I laugh so hard that the remaining enemies do the same to me... Which then incites more laughter.

depends if the game needs the violence or gore to be good.
Also depends on if the gore and violence actually have something to do with the game, or if they are just there for show

"Adding" blood n gore doesn't make a game better to me - typically i'm actually annoyed by it.

With this, i don't mean "a-team all the way". I would find it strange to spray someone with bullets, and him staying totally clean. But i don't need an "extra", and i (except of in SOME horror games) am bored by how obsessively videogames fixate on it.

Nope, I'm Australian too, I just had the presence of mind to buy my copy from the UK Steam Store

I'm of the opinion that it depends on what type of game it is. If it's say, Mario, doesn't need gore, but if it's something like Fallout, then yes, it does need gore.

Depends on the game.
I can't imagine Left 4 Dead 2 without the gore.
But some games just wouldn't be the same with gore in it.
