Do you trust Google?

I wanted to raise this topic for discussion as I am curious to see what people's view's are on the search engine giant Google.

Obviously they are by far and away the largest search engine and for good reason it delivers excellent results, it is not clutered and it works.

Now many years down the road they have collect collosal amounts of data on everything. including information about you and me. So much so in fact that governments are trying to demand data from them. on top of this is the release of their new browser and from what I have read it is a superb program, that is extremely fast and stable.

While I use google for searching I am rapdily becoming alergic to using any other of their products. Perhaps I am just paranoid but when a single business controls the amount of power and data that google does one has to question what they do with the data and whom they release said data to and why.

I never really been one for paranoia but google has not shown perfect morals or attitude (the China internet filtering service they provided for a very large sum is one example)

What do you think?

Is google trust worthy?

Do you feel comfortable with using the ever increasing amount of google apps and gadgets?

Thanks for reading.

Whether or not they should be trusted, they get the job done. They're the best search engine slowly expanding into everything: from emails to satellites. I would easily find more reasons to distrust microsoft than google, which is also a company sticking it's nose into everything. Nothing can be fully trusted nowadays, but on the list of relatively trustworthy, google can proudly stand on the award pedestal.

I'm using Chrome right now. It is by far the best browser out now and is only in beta stage still. I do trust Google.

Well, Chrome would be the best if it were better at streaming videos without crashing every now and again. I will most likely use the final version as my default browser, though.

I trust Google at the moment. One of their company mottoes, though is, "Don't be Evil," so I'm not sure if that's a foreshadowing of things to come......

...And I'm serious, that is their motto- look it up!

I really can't blame them for charging high, but they've been around and been successful enough to warrant having everything.

I trust them more than MS.

I do. But turn off the SafeSearch in Google's picture search, and you'll be fucked up for life.

And I don't get it, what's with the whole "I hate MS" thing circulating around here?

I trust Google for now. I imagine the thought will be revisited in 5-10 years time.

I'd always understood that as a general silicon valley motto.

Fast but oh so full of holes; I'll admit its because its still beta but if your using it then firewall yourself to the hilt and if your paranoid (like me) run it sandboxed.

As for trusting google I dont trust any corperations purely because shareholder profit comes before altruism.

As much as every other company, Google started small... like, very small. And just like every other company, it's after our money. EVEN IF they don't take money for most things they do, for those that they actually they siphon money from are actually really good money makers. Like advertising for example.

I trust Google, not because they gave us the search engine or Chrome or iGoogle or whatever, but just because they actually do quality stuff, like Blizzard does for games. Makes the internet a more pleasant place to be in.

Besides, it's a natural proof of great marketing.

Well, Google were the ones who came up with it first, at least according to Wikipedia (I trust Wikipedia, too!)

Opera is better than firefox! *ducks*

I do trust Google, more from a tried and true standpoint. Darksaiyan said it better than I could, and that's about where I stand. They have a good privacy policy, and they tend to fight pretty hard to keep your info safe (based off of the Youtube lawsuits from Verizon and the like).

Google did fight something of a losing battle when it censored search results from Google China. I'm on the fence about that one.

when i sit and read about the company and all of its perks like naptime and all that, i can only think of the company as being run by Hank Scorpio. and that would be the best.company.ever.
(cookies for whoever knows hank scorpio)

I'm running the basic windows firewall and thats it. I mean, in order to hack me you'd have to hack the campus network first so I'm pretty well protected, but yeah, it does have its holes.

I trust them about as far as I trust any company. (about as far as I can throw their main building), but that doesn't mean I refuse to use their products. Gmail is far and beyond the best email client I have ever used, I use google calendar, and obviously I use google search. As for the China thing, that was an issue of the government forcing censorship on its people, so the real evil in that case was the Chinese government.
