You really shouldn't trust any one review, because reviews by nature are only opinions. even independent reviewers still fall under this. if demoing the game isn't an option looking over several reviews that you've found to agree with in the past, or noticing consistent praise or riffs on a game help too. if 30 reviews all say that Tony Hawk controls like garbage, you have to at least take that into consideration.
I'll read the reviews for their opinions, but if I'm dying to try out a game I'd give it a go
IGN seems somewhat inconsistent with its number ratings (a bit awkward at times), but that's made up in the actual commentary made by the reviewer
my example for this is the Wolverine game
the rating was 7.7 I think, and that's pretty low
but in the reviewers commentary he pretty much said it was great and he had a lotta fun (no matter what the actual score)
called it "guilty pleasure" haha
I like to read reviews from a number of sites for a good general consensus. However, the reviews on 1UP and Destructoid tend too carry a little more weight with me.
