Do you use a microphone when playing online?

So today I got my first ever pair of headsets for multiplayer. And so far, I'm rather mixed on this as a whole. While playing Red Dead Redemption, I had a nice conversation with one guy and an alright Team Shootout that was made better through communication...but then I also got the assholes. Of course there was the generic douchey 12 year old, but when some English fellas invited me to join their posse, they kicked me out the exact moment they realized I was American. Is this pretty much the norm? Half good people and half assholes? I'm kinda surprised, I've always heard EVERYONE online is an asshole =P

Anywho, like the tiltle says. Do you think it's worth wearing headphones for the good multiplayer moments, or do the assholes put you off of it? Or do you simply not own any to begin with? (And yes, before someone brings it up I am well aware of the 'Mute' function. Useful when someone's mic is only emitting a heavy breathing sound)

EDIT: Just changed the title to what I meant it to say.

Yes because they are a lot more useful for games I play like counter-strike and when other people are sleeping I don't annoy them.

Yes, I always have my headphones on if I'm at my computer. Partially due to the fact that I like the isolated feeling that headphones give which helps with immersion and also due to the fact that I wont bother the rest of my family with noise.

He is referring not to the Turtlebeach headphones or whatever. Simply a headset with a mic that enables you to communicate with others, not channel audio through it as well.

Either way, I keep it on for the hope I will hit an intelligent person who I can cooperate with. But I turn it off at times and do things that will enrage people, especially with 'cheap' tricks. Fun times hearing them scream so hard.
Fortunately for me, I have both a headset with a microphone and a regular microphone for communicating without a headset.

I only use the headset when I need to. IE, trying not to wake people up.

I love my Turtle Beaches, never game without them.

They're nice and immersive for both online and single player.

The 'one headphone' default 360 headset is awful, I can't use it.

I have a friend list of 80+ people. Most of which I met in some game somewhere and we chatted for a bit (or alot depending) and yeah 50/50 sounds about right.

Really? I love it. I don't like the new ones though. The ones built with the chatpad in mind and have the volume control hanging off the wire. So much more comfortable (and far less sensitive so you can't hear the fly farting across the other guys room) than that Socom mic for PS3. I hate that thing (although since no one talks on PSN I don't need it).

I have a bluetooth headset that I use on my PS3 occasionally, but usually only when I'm playing with friends. Unless I meet someone who seems cool and then I may turn it on and talk to them.

I stopped using them, because people who play online obviously never talk to girls, and when they do, they are just assholes.

I've also met english guys. Quite popular to be english these days. Who'd have thought!

I love using my headset. My XBL friends list has about 4 friends from real life on it, and the rest I met through games (mostly gears 2). However, I generally don't do game chat. Mostly just party chat with mates or the clan. That way, I don't have to put up with whiny 12 year olds :)

I also mostly use it only with friends, and on a handful of servers that aren't full of dumbasses. There are too many obnoxious people on the Internets who aren't worth dealing with. With people you know or somewhere with good admins, though, it can be useful/fun to have.

Only when I use to play World Of Warcraft. I have thought about breaking it out for Team Fortress 2 but I don't really see the need.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I dont but when I do, I don't usually say a whole lot 'cos I know how distracting it can be to everyone else. The only abuse I've ever given is when people shoot me on COD:WAW when clearly there's a freakin' light-bulb over my head saying "Please don't shoot, i'm on the pause menu, don't be an ass"
