Brb, buying earplugs...
Maybe they'll counteract the effects of using headphones with high bass... Hmm.

One sound that earplugs will not block out is deep droning bass or the thudding type. The frequencies that bass runs on are so low that are more felt rather than heard.

So your saying...earplugs give you super hearing?

With super hearing comes super responsibility.

With super responsibility comes cookies.

And with cookies comes the dark side.

Oh I see why you warned us. Thank you!
Delicious logic...

I wear earplugs when I play music and when I'm at clubs.

Just so I don't go deaf.. You know how it is.

In all seriousness, I have a great deal of trouble distinguishing sounds in a loud environment (yes, I know everyone does, but it seems to be worse for me, I can be sitting with someone else exactly equidistant and at the same angle from someone talking in a loud room, the other person will hear everything perfectly, I'll hear nothing intelligible). So, this hyper-sensitivity is actually sounding pretty good to me.

I guess you'll just have to wean yourself off the headphone addiction, much like any other addiction. Find a quiet room and gradually expose your ears to louder and louder music? (Don't go over the top, but it sounds like you're going to have to do something). Good luck =)

Does that mean...if I shove a bunch of earplugs in my mouth, I'll be able to yell really loudly and make people's heads explode? Or shove them in my nose and get super Bloodhound smelling? Oh man, I'm going to shove earplugs into all of my orifices! I'll be UNSTOPPABLE!!
Before you try this severely consider the implications of a superpowered lower rear orifice. You may not really enjoy that especially if you consider the lack of control reported to go with this ability.

I myself don't use earplugs but often do experience the afrementioned hearign issues. load noise such as tv/music is effective at blocking it out but any other noise tears at the ears and scrapes at the inside of my skull. the worst indivdual noise is knives and forks clattering and scratching on plates, however the worst total is when I get struck with it when I am standing at my checkout at work surrounded by the god awful creatures incessant monkey chatter. thoe couple right in front of my are ok but all those background noises make me want to scream and start wailing at them with whatever item of grocerys I happen to be handling at the time. I've come up with a few interesting uses for common household items/vegetables for example have you ever considered the correlation between the size of and average carrot when compared to an eyesocket almost like they were intended to be used like that

Awh, I love wearing headphones... I pretty much use them for everything, music, games, youtube or other videos on my laptop. I don't think I'd enjoy it as much without them. Well, future me can worry, I'm livin it up!
How long does it take for hearing to go by the way? Right now I've hearing sensitivity well above average...

About 5 years ago I got a job where I had to work nights. The biggest problem was sleeping during the day with just the usual street noise, lawnmowers, construction noise etc. Not all really loud noises but not noises that are not usually heard at night so it does make sleeping difficult.

I started wearing earplugs as they were the only thing could block out the noise. They did it so well infact that the silence becomes sort of addictive. After a while even when I wasn't alseep I would put them in while I was reading or on the computer. Lately it has become a problem though because now I am super sensitive to noise.

Now I hear a lawnmower, which used to be just a normal suburban neighbourhood noise and its like someone is screaming as loud as they can in my ear. Now this is the weirdest thing. Whenever I go to say a shopping centre and there is alot of ambient noise from people talking and music from shops and stuff like that. All the sounds are loud and not moulded together to give the "ambience" and honestly it is the weirdest feeling and hard to describe to anyone who hasn't had this happen. Its sort of like there are 100 different conversations going on and you can hear every one of them.

So just a warning for people who get used to the tranquility of earplugs. There are side effects later down the line.
I can't handle complete silence It makes me want to scream and hit things. Funny thing is I LOVE my music up loud yet hate when others get even close to the volume of what I'm listening to.
I agree with this guy. Loud music is really only fun when you do it. When others do it, you want to slap them and tell them to shut the fuck up.

OT: I don't like total silence either. I usually have a fan or humidifier going to make some background noise when I sleep. Plus, earplugs would get annoying, as I can't even stand the earbuds for music and stuff.

Well, that won't last. Enjoy the permanent ringing in your ears when you're 40. A decade or two of continuous headphone use is enough to screw them up.

I think how it works is, the earplugs protect your ears... allowing them to repair and be more effective than normal, or at least, that's how it seems and you can hear better.

I've just got good hearing anyway and on top of that, I can't block out background noise, so I feel for ya.

Well then, you immediately need to start wearing eye patches over both eyes as well. Imagine the possibilities.........

But yeah, I also have abnormally good hearing. When I got tested some years back I was well above the average of human hearing for both the high and low spectrums. It was a neat thing to know.

I have to use earplugs when I play in my drumline, or else I get tinnitus. Ears start ringing and crap.

I would never use earplugs to sleep thru noise, rather i use music, and earphones, and chilled out music. But being addicted to silence sounds rather wonderful.

I get really bored with silence. To the point where I really want music on whatever im going. I even once almost tried to listen to music during a lecture, but then i realised that i needed my ears for the lecture.

You know, I might have to try that cuz I actually have a hard time hearing. It definitely save me a trip to the doctor.
