I don't think it works like that. It's just once you've become accustomed to sleeping in absolute silence, taking away that silence just makes everything more noticeable.

Yeah I would doubt that doing this would make bad hearing better, it just makes normal hearing more sensitive to sounds making them seem louder.

Its been good reading this thread, especially the people that think I am schitzo or have some sort of condition. I know my description in the OP could have gave that impression but its not the case. I am sane, its just I have developed a sensitivity to what it seems certain frequencies of sounds. I avoid doctors like the plague anyway. After seeing them poison 2 of my family members with chemotherapy there not my most trusted people. I prefer to just let nature take its course :)

Ok, so it sounds gross, but i once had a massive build up of earwax. Like peanut sized, one in each ear. They blocked out a lot of sound.

I had these for a while. I refused to see a doctor, because i hate going to the doctors. Partially out of embarrassment, money, and general disliking.

So anyway, i had this for quite some time, until i eventually swallowed my pride and got them flushed out by my GP once a regular conversation in a busy place became much more difficult than it ought to be.

The amount of sound that i had been missing out on, which flooded back to me, was amazing. I heard weird things that i had never heard before. Little things like rustling outside or the brushing of my feet against the carpet.

What im trying to say is, i know what you mean.

Oh also, i once attended a university lecture on how your mind blocks out certain sounds when you get used to them, to an extent that you can't hear them even if you tried.

I know it doesn't heal hearing, but just to be able to pick up stuff better would be great.

First off, I know about the 30 day rule but I am going to post anyway, because I break it for a good reason.

I can confirm everyting that the thread started have said.
I got tinnitus 2 years ago from a loud party and it hasn't gone away. Later I started using earplugs in hope of protecting my ears so they can 'heal' (which is seldom possible btw).
I got into 24/7 use and after a year I can say that it has done more harm than good.
Not long ago I figured out why my ears got so sentitive while doing this. The middle ear with the hearing bones has ligaments which can get loose if the humidity rises. Other problems can also arise, like infection and what not.

I suggest you to be very careful about long term ear plug usage.
Thanks for you attention.
