Its a simple enough question, but I'll give a bit of background as to why this question was raised.

I was doing laundry earlier, and came back to my room, figuring (like I usually do) that I can just go back when its done. except I went to check on it and see how much time was left, and saw all my clothes, still soaked, and no way they could have been done. So I looked inside and saw someone had taken out my clothes, and put their tennis shoes in the washing machine and were washing them that way.

Now I just kinda stopped, mostly cause I was pissed about my clothes, but also at just who does this kinda thing, cause I've never seen anyone wash tennis shoes in a washing machine. Then I got to thinking, is this a common thing, or is this person just doing something unusual?

So there's the question to all you out there. Do you wash your shoes in the washing machine, if at all?

me personally, I dont even wash my shoes. the most wash they get is if I step in a puddle or it rains. Now I have friends who do was their shoes, but they use dish soap and warm water soaked rag.

Wet shoes suck, so I think its reasonably common for people to try drying them in the dryer. But its generally not accepted practice. Seems like the heat and the hard rubber would mean a lot of wear and tear on both the shoes AND the dryer. Washing them in the washer makes a similar, though less, sense. In extraordinary circumstances, I will wash my shoes with a hose, or even rinse them in the sink (For example, after wading through silty, nasty floodwater in my house). Bust a washing machine seems unnecessary.

I feel like I would ruin my shoes if I washed then that way. My shoes are cheap and fall apart easily so I just sick with washing them with a hose when they get dirty (and by dirty I mean caked in mud, not a few specks of dirt).

I'd have taken the shoes and tossed them in the dryer.

If someone is going to be a prick, you might as well be one to them.

I threw them away.

EDIT: before someone gets the wrong idea, when the garbage cans are these big rubber maid plastic ones.

So I set the shoes in there on top of a pizza box and left them there for whoever put them in there to take them back out. Then I had to sit and wait for my laundry to get done to make sure the same thing didnt happen again.

I've never washed shoes... ever!
My feet don't smell at all and if I *know* I'm going to get them so filthy there's no return I wear really cheap £5 ones that I'll happily throw away over my £90 ones.

I wash my converse in the washing machine as they are mainly fabric anyway, my smart Italian leather shoes; no way!
And my new rocks would destroy the machine...

No I don't use the washing machine to watch it. I just hand wash it myself if I need to clean it, whatever happen to doing that way to clean it?

I had to wash a pair in the washing machine the other week because my cat threw up all over them and there was no way I was gonna wash them by hand. I put a towel in the machine and that seemed to dull the noise a bit. I don't really wash them usually.

I mostly wear leather shoes, which I would NEVER wash in a washing machine, but if I wore tennis shoes then I don't see why not.

No...high risk of damaging the shoes, I tend to buy relatively expensive shoes (I used to buy cheap ones and tear through them, I play rough. Buying better quality ones now and they last longer, definitely make up the cost) and I don't want to mess them up when I could just clean them by hand. Takes little time, much less than the time it takes to dry. If you're talking inside, my shoes never get that smelly, my gym shoes can do but I leave them to air out and yeah, they're fine.

Never. If my shoes are wet and I don't want them to mold I'll dry them with a hairdryer and treat them with Lysol to kill the germs. If they're stinky I'll put them in baking soda for a while and vacuum it out. If they're dirty on the outside, I'll wipe them down with a cloth. If they can't be restored with any of those, they end up in the trash. It's not worth damaging the shoes and possibly the washer and dryer.

i only just found out you can put your shoes in the washing machine when mum did it with my lil sisters shoes the other day.. downside of that the red shoes turned all the whites in the machine pink.. she didnt think about that until too late :p

I have chuck taylors that I have been known to run thru in the wash. By themselves. Then put on TUMBLE DRY DELICATE. Good lord I don't want to think about the rubber soles melting in there.

If it's trainers for things like sports or the gym then I do it every so often, they start to stink with the amount of sweat and wear they go through. Seems sensible.

Wouldn't put dress shoes in there though, that'd be just stupid.

Also, what sort of arse takes out someones half finished washing? How rude!
