Do you wish gaming was still "just for nerds"?

Gaming is going (well there already) mainstream.
Comics are the inspiration for a ton of this summer's blockbusters.
The Tardis is not something that only heavy sci-fi nerds can identify.
I think we finally won.

Oh god yes, I miss those days. When I didn't have to listen to frat boys screaming "noob" or "******" or "Cock whore!" in my ear every thirty seconds.
Or a pre-pubescent voice screaming racial slurs or other angry slang in my ear. When games were games, and not "casual."
But there were nerd girls back then too, I dated a few, even.

I'm not of the nerd archtype, so I suppose I'm happy that gaming has been more accepted.
I have played games ever since I was five-six though.

I'm not so selfish that I'd want to keep an entire entertainment medium to "us nerds" just so that I could have the satisfaction of being interested in something with niche appeal.

It's still happening, yo.

Mother and daughter walked by GAME the other day, and the mother said, "those are the stupid games people play."

I was about to tell her about how surgeons who are also gamers are significantly more skilled, but then she might be stupid enough to assume I'm talking about causation rather than correlation.
I.e. it's more likely surgeons who have less imagination and/or manual dexterity choose not to play games, 'cos they're n00bs.

I don't think gaming is becoming more mainstream, I think nerdiness as a whole is becoming more mainstream. And there are so many different types of nerd. All you really need to do is look outside these days to see that popular culture and nerdiness aren't mutually exclusive.

Course not. Like others have said, having more people interested means more variety and those who do game are regarded as weirdos. There's still that selection of games aimed for the 'gaming nerds' so it's not like true gamers have been forgotten.

Sort of.

I like the idea that I can have a casual discussion about games with someone like others do with sports, where it's more accepted and less ostracized. On the other hand, it's led to a dearth of creativity, where instead of games being made that are creative and feel unique, it's become a "push samey game from last week out the door so we can make the next samey game" to keep the millions of dollars flowing. That creative aspect is what I miss.

Yes, if it also meant the revival of certain dead genres that appealed to the thinking gamer.

Well it has it's good points and bad. Good in that I don't automatically get branded as an outcast for it. Of course I'll get funny looks when I say which games I play, but still. I bet it's also a lot easier now to find a nice girl who's into the same things as I'm into, in one degree or another, now than it was back in the niche days.

Then again, it hasn't exactly done RPG's that much good. I miss the times when RPG's like Planescape: Torment were the norm. Certain other game genres were also more prevalent.

Certainly would mean that I wouldn't have to put up with all the tards who love CoD games to death... Because most of them who tell me they think it's God don't own computers, play any other games or like anything outside the realistic war shooter shit that just keeps being re-hashed like mad.

EDIT: Other than that it wouldn't make much difference for me... I'm not into any of the games being released so lack of support/popular demand for new and more games wouldn't piss me off.

And pretty much all the people who do come to our LANS are pretty damn nerdy considering most who aren't have something like footy practice or whatever on the same date.

It's a good thing, with the usual downfalls of a growing entertainment medium:

The more popular videogames become, the more money is put into the industry. With more money the developers have more money to create better quality products, OR incentive to re-hash commercially successful ideas for safe ways to make money.

The ratio of crappy-to-excellent games will remain the same, but as the industry grows both will be more numerous. We will have an overflow of crap, but we will also far more good and excellent games than before (same as with movies).

Also: I don't enjoy feeling exclusive (which means I have to exclude others) any more than i enjoy feeling excluded from something myself. So no, I don't think going back to excluding others from our community will bring any good (It's what killed Comics).
