Do your friends know you play video games?

After a few months my friends finally figured out that I played alot of video games, it was interesting how they found out since I hadn't told them I played games (Since they don't themselves so conversations never ended up in games discussions)

So I was fairly suprised that they didn't figure it out when I was asked in a lesson what magazines and newspapers I read (I answered PC Gamer...) so they clicked yesterday while they were watching me work. I was writing up an assignment and was not looking at the monitor or keyboard and typing farily quickly with no mistakes which lead them onto asking "How the hell do you do that?" to which I replied that I knew where all the keys where. Of course this clicked in their head (I do like seeing people click things, so very visible when they do it and is easy to tell exactly what they are thinking at the time) that I played video games instead of working.

Though now they don't believe I spend more time reading than playing games (Which is true, I prefer reading forums to actually playing games, unless it is a new game)

But now I'm curious if other people on the escapist have had similar stories, have your friends ever found out something about you without you telling them?

My friends ARE gamers.

Well, not all of them, but a lot of them.

I'm in college for programming, I've done more computer science in high school than most people I know and most of my friends are nerds. If they wouldn't have played video games with me and knew computers, I doubt we would even have a common talking point.

Many of my friends are gamers themselves. Many of them are female, and some of them are over 40 (I'm not far behind) and none of us give a damn if someone thinks we shouldn't be raiding or shooting bad guys in the face or driving F1....

Most of my friends are gamers themselves. And those who aren't either know I'm a gamer or don't care.

Well, I don't tell my friends much at all, so almost everything they find out about me is something that I didn't tell them.

Not one of my real life friends knows I use this site for instance. I keep it that way for the same reason that I don't let people on this forum into my real life.

A few of my friends are dimly aware that I play computer games but since they never see me do it, it barely matters to them. I don't exactly hide the fact but nor do I go around telling people because I just assume that there's no reason why they'd give a shit. My girlfriend also knows about my gaming but I don't play games much when she's around because I'd rather play with her during the brief moments we spend together. She's addicted to Facebook games and also doesn't mind a bit of Diablo II but that's about as far as it goes. The only real gaming conversations I occasionally have is with a few of my teenage guitar students who are into COD, GTA and stuff, and there's one guy at work who does a bit of freelance writing of game reviews for magazines so I talk to him but I don't see him often.

On a site like this, not many people will be able to claim they have "friends" that don't know they like to game.

On topic, that's the main connection point that I have with most of my friends, is that we play LAN/splitscreen/mumorpegers at each others houses, and I would probably only ever talk to them inside of school otherwise.

Well yeah, I meant most of my friends through games or at least an interest in games anyway. Through playing them at school and then on to studying Games Design at Uni.

Back when I was younger, like 10 years ago, most of them didn't know. Since then I've converted most of them into gamers (thank you Mario Kart for helping in this process) so they definitely know I am.

Ok I am somewhat of a compulsive liar and I do hide a lot about myself from my friends... but of all the things about me why would I hide the fact that I game, just seems a rather trivial thing to hide from people.

Now that I think about it, I literally have no gamer friends. I love games, but I go to school in a place that doesn't have many gamers. I'm a girl and I hang with my girls often, but video games is something we don't relate at all (unless it's like an iphone game or something.)

All of my friends do (if you consider solitaire as a game in this thread), but most play actual console games (2 suck at it). But all my online only friends know how to play (obviously).

Same here. My best friend keeps finding all these weird games each day. Also, he never shuts up about how much of a better gamer he is....

Half my freinds are gamers. The other half know because me and a few of my freinds who hang around them hear us talking about it. The problem arises when those freinds try to talk about nothing but games, alot my freinds think its all I do when I really spend most of my time doing work for collage, go to work, go to collage or just go out. Even I try to change the topic around my freinds when it switches to games. Unless its like Marvel vs Capcom or summit, then I don't shut up.
