BBC Worldwide have announced the first in a new range of console games:
Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock will immerse gamers in the universe of Doctor Who, allowing them to take on the role of the Doctor and River Song as they travel across time and space to save the Earth. Gamers must learn to master the complexities of time travel with exceptional time based game play, changes made in one time will impact another creating multiple possibilities and challenging players to solve puzzles across the centuries.
The game will be released early next year, initially for Sony's Playstation 3 and Vita platforms and a PC version, and is being developed by Supermassive Games for BBC Worldwide Digital Entertainment and Games, and is written in collaboration with BBC Wales. No 360 version has been revealed yet :(

Both Matt Smith and Alex Kingston have reprised their roles of the Doctor and River Song respectively for the brand new storyline, which is to be presented in high definition, using photo-real graphics, television quality scenes and motion capture to create in-game characters.

Robert Nashak, EVP of Digital Entertainment at BBC Worldwide said:
We're creating these new games for Playstation 3 and Vita with adaptations that will bring the wonder, adventure and madness of Doctor Who to each platform. Working with a top-tier UK development partner like Supermassive Games demonstrates BBC Worldwide's commitment to create world-class Doctor Who games for fans of the show and gamers alike.
There is also a dedicated Twitter feed, @DoctorWhoTEC, where more information will be announced as the release date approaches.

Here is a trailer;

For those following the Doctor Who game series', there have been 2 Doctor Who games released so far. Doctor Who Top Trumps on PS2, Wii, PC and DS, and the (much much better) Doctor Who: Invasion Earth on DS and Wii.

There are also the Doctor Who Adventure Games (free to people inside the UK) available from the BBC Doctor Who site.

Edit: It should be noted that the Doctor Who Adventure Games are actually classed as canon stories. It will be interesting to see if these new games will be as well.

Update: Now with official blog from Playstion.com

The Cloister Bell tolleth... you know shit's about to get real when you hear that ;D. Anyhow, as a Doctor Who fan I'm intrigued by this, so yeah, I'm certainly going to look forward to it. Provided they can do the franchise justice. Since you know, aside from the Adventure Games (a pretty good way of getting the universe into game form), Doctor Who is one of those things that doesn't really lend itself easily to video games...

Yeah, it's kinda hard to portray a game where the main character is largely a pacifist that runs from most things!

However since this game will have River "unlike me she really doesn't mind shooting people" Song. That could cover the action sequences while playing as the Doctor could cover the puzzles!

A big failure on the part of the BBC to license the IP to a studio that only develops to one console platform. No Wii or 360 version will really hurt their sales.

I've seen the last Doctor Who game that was made on the PC and I didn't like it so I'm not very interested in this one. Playing AS the Doctor is rubbish. Make up a new companion and let us play as that person instead so the Doctor can be his goofy self.

Maye we'll even get to play as her and have fun throwing ourselves off of high ledges over and over and over again!

I didn't hate the character to begin with, but she gradually became more and more obnoxious in tandem with the writers being more and more in love with her. At this point, I wish she'd just piss off.

Well according to the information about it you can play at the gun-toting River Song!

YES! If the writing is just as good and they get the gameplay mechanics nailed down then this could turn out really good.

EDIT: What? Not on the 360? I am disappoint. I guess I'll be trying this out on PC.

Well depending on the enemies you face in the game you could just throw her in front of them as many times as you want!

If you give a kid a middle name like that, you're not really leaving much hope in the way of a future career. :p

That's not really satisfying enough. That'd be, like, honourable death in battle. Since River is so amazing and wonderful and perfect in every way the writers would probably call that a good death for her. I'd rather her own stupidity did her in :p

As for doing puzzles as the Doctor, I don't feel it would really work. Most of his solutions rely on a sudden flash of genius because he's just that smart. There's not really a way to replicate that for your average player, who'll either have to plod through puzzles or get annoyed that the puzzles seem designed for supergenius intelligence.

"What's this? "Extremely High Voltage"? Well, I don't need gloves, because I'm River Son-ZAP!"

Bingo! Though sadly, The Power Of Love would still probably save her somehow :-(

Damn you, I was going to post this, I should have known that I would never of beaten you to anything Dr Who related. Unless, of course...I did post it first, you saw it and travelled back in time to post it before I did. Cunning.

Anyway, I hope the game is a hell of a lot better than the games the BBC released for free last year, they really weren't great, or even good for that matter. I suppose it's hard to make a good game about a 900+ year old space pacifist who solves problems by pointing his magic wand at stuff.

Running down corridors for the win!

What i'm wondering is why in time and space you would have Matt Smith as the Doctor when you could have the masterful Troughton, Tom Baker or Jon Pertwee. I mean it's computer animated and you can have anyone you want, so you might as well have the best.... Right?
