So, that canceled/fictitious/whatever Doctor Who movie that was whispered about last year and then debunked... is going ahead after all... [http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118046098]

Some thoughts:

Attaching the HP Final Four director to the project indicates that they are Serious? about this. And they also claim it's not going to follow from the current show's continuity, and take a "fresh approach to the material."

Why am I getting the feeling that it's going to be an Origin Story?, where we learn what the First Doctor was up to during the several centuries he was alive before the series began?

It'll be shit. I have wanted one for years, but then I read what it'll be about, and no. It will be SHIT.

Unless...they get Christopher Eccleston back as the Doctor, get Stephen Moffat to write, get a director from the show, and set it during the Time War. Between the 8th and 9th Doctor's screen time. PLEASE?! Just make an hour and a half long episode! You already do this with the two parters guys!

Eh, I'll keep up some hopeful optimism for it (I'm sure I'll go see it either way). I've enjoyed Yates work on the Harry Potter movies, and it does seem like he wants to take his time with this and do it right.

Yeah, Yates is good... and although Doctor Who is my favorite currently-running TV show (seriously, it is), I am not enough of a fanboy to claim that it's ever been gifted with an overabundance of quality, so I'll give this a shot, at least... but I'm none too hopeful.

Ah...well, TBH, as long as they don't get RTD or Moffatt to write, it might break from convention and not suck.

You take that back, it was a fantastic film!

OT: If it's handled right it could be fantastic. I just hope they realise that the slightly tacky look is what makes it Doctor Who.

I really want to start in on Doctor Who. Maybe this will be a good way to start. Or I could try to find it on Netflix if I get it.

End of the day, the BBC make film length episodes for the show anyway, I'm really struggling to see what an actual film will have which will make it worth the money, time and energy. Maybe this is why there is only going to be one season with Matt smith next year? He'll be busy doing something he does anyway. I just hope they don't try to make the film and the series at the same time. Whatever quality that is left would be drained away very sharpish.

I agree, the TV movie was great and the tackt stuff is what makes Doctor Who the memorable classic it is.

Definitely not going to go see it. It is already hobbling out of the gate some how with all four legs broken.

I can't see any real Doctor Who fan going to see this, since it will have nothing to do with the TV series and it will not be canon because nobody in the TV series is involved.

This has no baring on what is happening with the television series.

It is just going to be one of those stupid cash in movies where some director or writer wants to put their own spin on a story, book, or television franchise. They will hope that they can lure in unsuspecting DW fans that are uninformed and think this is affiliated with the TV series.

I normally think boycotts are stupid, but this is one thing that would be highly appropriate to boycott.

I would definitely sign a petition to whatever studio this is coming from, to drop the production.

Steven Moffat is a god incarnate. you sir, suck.

i have low hopes for this movie. Doctor Who is a very complicated series to make a movie for. itll be weird and take away from the rest of the series. everything from the old movies, show, new seires, radio shows and books are all connected and have their place in the DW universe. they all fit in a coherent timeline. this is gonna be an oddball sitting off to the side.

Netflix the television series. The movie isn't going to be a place to start, because it will have nothing to do with the series. It shouldn't even be allowed to be in production. If this movie does come out it is just going to confuse people that go see it and then try to watch the TV series.

So they're basically doing what they did back in the 60's, with the movies starring Peter Cushing? Eh, I guess it could be worse. Since Cushing is dead, maybe they can get his old partner in crime Christopher Lee to play the part. I'd /love/ to see his take on the character.

So like the Star Trek movie from 2009, but with it being clear that the TV show is the primary continuity? It could be worse. I know they said at the end of the movie that it took place in a parallel universe, but unless we get a new show before we get the other two movies, that's likely to be the universe we're stuck with for any future shows. At least Doctor Who has an ongoing series, so we don't have to worry about the canon being completely replaced (well, anymore so than the new series messed around with the canon from the old series, anyway.)

Star Trek is already ruined because of that movie. There is already a new Star Trek series in the works, and the head creator said he wanted it to be very similar to the movie in that he wanted the cast to be very young and "hip" in a sense. Though the guy also said he wanted it to have some similarity to ST:TNG, but I think the man is crazy.

I just want a new series that is exactly in the style of ST:TNG and the ones that came after(accept Enterprise), not some silly ploy to try and make it on the level of the interests of kids and teens, young adults these days just for the sake of that.

I'm objecting to the Doctor Who movie because the show is already in a rocky place right now, with how utterly mediocre to awful the last series was. I just don't want something like this movie some how throwing the show even more off track and confusing newcomers, and possibly new writers they might bring onto the series. The series already needs an overhaul to get it back on track, it doesn't need this movie to possibly mess things up.

You know, you took the exact opposite message from that interview that I did; what I got out of it was he wanted a show set in the original continuity, but he wanted a younger cast with better special effects -- which, granted, could easily lead to Stargate: Universe syndrome, but then Enterprise pretty much had that anyway, so I doubt it will be any /worse/ than that show was.

As for Doctor Who: I thought the last season was excellent. The problem here is that Moffat and Smith seem to be fans of the original series, which was a lot sillier than the Davies penned seasons were. Whether you like it or not depends on whether or not you like the old series. Judging by the fact that you talked about Star Trek TNG, but didn't mention TOS at all suggests the slight cheesiness in the last season is a bit offputting for you, while for others it's exactly what the show needed.

"Starting from scratch"? "Completely fresh approach?" I'm with ya, this sounds like an origin story.

Also, lol?.
