Cheats were fun when they FUCKING WORKED PROPERLY. Sorry, I actually just got done trying to enter a cheat to an old, apparently non-receptive game. The cellphone system in Saint's Row 2 (which, mind, had none of that trophy bullshit in the PS3 version) was pretty good; "It worked" or "it didn't work."

What I hate most are the games that have cheats, but won't let you save if you activate the more useful ones, even make you earn them first.
"Oh, but if you cheat you're missing TEH CHALLENJ!" Maybe I don't give a damn about your "challenge," maybe I stopped enjoying the game an hour ago and would rather strap a magic propeller to my head and charge through the overpowered enemies, near-invincible bosses, insta-kill traps, and frustrating timers to get back to having fun, fourth wall-breaking, ill-gained fun, like ripping through the streets in a scooter knocking Ultor mini-tanks off the road.

Then again, cheats are probably born of glitches anyway (see falling pedestrian cheat in Saint's Row 2) and most likely take a lot of extra time and effort that apparently needs to be spent making everything look as "realistic" as possible and developing "DLC" that'll be done before the game is released. I guess there just isn't time for cheats anymore.
I'm agreeing with the rant. Sometimes I want cheat codes just to screw around in the game without worrying about "the challenge" or whatever. Sure, John Marston is awesome and all, but I do get tired of frickin' cougars taking me out with no warning. Screw those cats.

I want to propose to you, but you'd be my 7th spouse if I actually followed up all these proposed internet marriages. I really miss running around San Adreas with "Civilians have guns" "Civilian Riot" "Gun Set 3" "Super Jumps" "Super Punches" and "Flying Cars" all on at the same time. GTA4 really dropped the ball by only giving us "useful" cheats like "Give health" or "Give ammo" or "lower wanted level" and "spawn fast bike."

It because of achievements/trophies mostly that they don't include them anymore, and yes I do miss them.
I never thought of that. That makes me dislike achievements even more.

I'll always have Wompa Stompa.

I miss them, I only ever got to use the on Age Of Empires and MOH Frontline. I personally think it's a sad turn for the industry when the outrageous fun of cheatcodes has been superceded by the achievements feature. I play games to have fun! running around a level as an invincible soldier using only your worst weapon was awesome, being told that if you do that full level with your worst weapon you'll get an achievement is more challenging, yes, but not as much fun.

I miss cheats they just added a whole new level of enjoyment to your fucking around time, I miss the time when I could just put on god mode and just stand there laughing as the poor enemies tried to figure out how to kill me, Than you just walk up slowly to the enemies as you can just imagine the fear their going through only to be killed by my fist.

I loved the giant head cheat code in Spyro the Dragon(third game I think). ;_;
Can't say I miss them though, but they did add a lot of fun for when you just wanted to fool around.

yeees... i miss them so bad; there were so many plain and simple fun things you could do with them (see: many of the posts above)
but since no game can be released without dozens of achievements (what else could you advertise a game with? that it actually is fun, instead of giving you extreme cool achievements like "you found the left mouse button" and "you pressed x to not die"? what the f...), and cheats would so totally take out any challenge (the challenge! don't you see how challenging games have become the last couple of years?!) to get them achievements - while it simultaneously is impossible to not grant achievements while cheats are active; such coding will take decades and billions of dollars to develop - we'll just have to kiss cheats goodbye, for the good of modern, artistic and grown-up gaming, and the medium of videogames as a whole.

Damn I was just about to say that. What happened to big head mode? Like every fps on the N64 had one. What happened to it? Dammit bring big head mode back.

I enjoy cheats where I can use them because they add lots more hours of fun onto the games that include them, and mods can fill the same niche in games that don't. If you care about how people play singleplayer, you are just being a prick.

no cheat codes are a perfect example of how games are just too serious now-a-days.

Games are so easy today that doesn't need cheats.
Their normal modes are like playing with cheats.
It's true that the overall difficulty has gone down but it's still fun to run through levels not worrying about ammo or a sudden close-range shot-gun blast. I just realized RE5 has unlimited ammo and spent a bit of time rocket-launching Uroburos infected villagers for example xD

Would have been nice not worrying about health though >.> every scratch and Sheva would spray me with first aid e.e
