I know I certainly enjoyed em. For me, they made the game stupid-fun. Well, except for the ones to make hard games less impossible. But now with games being less difficult, the need becomes less important, except for the ones just to have fun... I guess I don't really know.

The game that lost the most out of taking out any good cheat codes was GTA. Vice City and San Andreas had the most entertaining cheats out of them ALL, and I could literally play for hours. GTA 4 was an enormous disappointment in that regard.

About San Andreas, I found that if you cheated too much it would glitch your game (thanks a lot Rock Star, fucking ass holes)

Not really. Cheating just takes all the fun and challenge out of a game.

Its like in a certain space sim i play on and off. I can download a cheat mod and have whatever i want right away but that just takes all the challenge and satisfaction out of it.

Comparing cheating and not cheating is kind of like comparing Garrys Mod and Minecraft as sandbox games.
Then one does not simply enter a cheat code...

And yeah, I miss them. I used to love looking cheat websites to see if the game I had rented had any cheats. I never always used them, but often I did in GTA. Using the flying car cheat to sneak across the border to lands you have not unlocked yet? then using the no police cheat? Pure awesomeness.

The best cheats weren't so you could win easier, they were so you could do WHATEVER CRAZY THING COMES TO YOUR MIND!!!

I can walk through walls with a bazooka with infinite ammo and people ragdoll all the way across the room at the drop of a hat? And their heads are huge? And they react really stupidly because they have no idea where I am?

It's party time.

This is why I will always love Bethesda and Blizzard games, as they have cheat codes and console commands built in for easy access.

I barely miss them. Never cared for them to begin with. I had fun with them in maybe two games. Hitman 2: Silent Assasin, and GTA VC.

Fallout 3 didnt have cheats, or oblivion, they had glitches but thats all.

I like the RDR approach, you complete challenges, they then unlock cheats.
~tgm begs to differ, notice I said cheats OR console commands

Spencer's right - Fallout 3 (and New Vegas, and Oblivion...) definitely had cheats. They took the form of console commands, sure, but they must surely fall under the "cheats" category in function.

I played them on PC, with console commands. In any case, I think we'll need to define "cheat". For me, anything that lets me set god mode, give myself unlimited money, spawn whatever I want and manipulate my stats at will is a cheat.

Not exactly "cheats" per se, but I want more games to have unlockable options and rewards in the vein of Saints Row 2. You unlock stuff that might normally constitute "cheats," but you've earned them. I know there's also "proper cheats" in the game, but I never really played with them.

In general, I do not miss cheats. Very few games were still fun after cheating.

In fact, the only game where I DO remember that cheating was acctually fun was Turok.. or was it Turok 2.. on the N64. Just running around blasting holes in a rabbid dinosaurs chest with a granade launcher was a hellufa load of fun while being immortal.

Fun cheats that have no effect on the game (eg big head mode, costume swaps, making guns look like dildos without effecting them in any other fashion) should be more common - some people will like them, some won't, and the ones the don't can simply ignore them. Cheats that have a more substantial effect (eg infinite ammo or invincibility) can be a lot of fun too, but should be restricted to single player where again it is up to the player whether or not they will enjoy using them. Obviously they would have to not count towards trophies/achievements or the achievements would become basically worthless. One problem with the few games that do include these is they often interfere with saving, which is a pain - I should be able to have say one serious file where I am actually working towards the story and an alt-save where I am manically blasting everything with moves with unlimited ammo in that superweapon that is crazy fun to use but overpowered, so they made ammo really scarce. Finally multiplayer should not have cheats per se, but mods that effect the gameplay for everyone (think the mutators from unreal tournament). Simply list the effects that are modifying the map on the lobby screen so that people wanting to play an instgib match can do so, people that enjoy low-grav capture the flag can do their own thing, and people that prefer just plain ol' vanilla gameplay can do that too.

Wow. Wall of text out of nowhere.

It because of achievements/trophies mostly that they don't include them anymore, and yes I do miss them.
Yes: instead of paintball, bigheaded, insane crowd mode I get 5gs or a bronze trophy for beating level one. Not all trophies are terrible but most of them aren't worth the cost of those wacky, wacky cheats.
Yeah, pretty much this.

Achievements/Trophies can add replay value and extra incentive when done properly. But a great game should be able to hold up without this gimmicky shit.

I miss the days when it seemed like every game I played had awesome and hilarious cheats. Goldeneye is the obvious example. But even stuff like Die Hard Trilogy on the PS1 had awesome secrets and fun cheats. Plus if you were having trouble you could always turn on those invincibility codes, which was needed a lot when you were 7 >_>

Seriously though, you could just fuck around for hours with the cheats in games. Nowadays it seems like they don't really appreciate that and want to be "srs bsns" about everything, as much as I love a lot of modern games.

I miss interesting cheats that add to the fun. Some have said they ruin games, but those are people who never used cheats right. I never cheated so I can beat the game and pretend Im awesome, I use cheats to see how I can muck around. My brother and I had a field day cheating in San Andreas. We were not doing any winning, we were blazing down hills in tanks, going yahoo all Dukes of Hazard style.

In Sandbox games they may be fun when you complete the game, but I prefer Skill > Cheats...
