Yeah, pretty much this.

Achievements/Trophies can add replay value and extra incentive when done properly. But a great game should be able to hold up without this gimmicky shit.
I actually just picked up Punisher for the Xbox. It's got cheats but they unlock like achievements which I think would be a great way to implement the achievement/ trophy system. Instead of giving players the useless gamer points or trophies, you unlock new game play features like cheats, alternate costumes, character skins, etc.

Yeah I really do miss cheats. On some games you just need to cheat to have fun.

Not to mention once you have beaten a game a few times cheats add variety.

My big complaint this gen has been the lack of proper unlockables and bonuses. It sucks.

Also, Punisher game was awesome, I should play that again sometime.

I miss my diglet that could fly and surf; my charmander who would surf and my transforming teleporting scyther. I am talking about red blue yellow gold silver and crystal with use of monster brain. I always said, "Charmander will surf since no pokemon would work harder to get me to cinnebar island than the little lizard who would die should he fail."

It because of achievements/trophies mostly that they don't include them anymore, and yes I do miss them.
Yes: instead of paintball, bigheaded, insane crowd mode I get 5gs or a bronze trophy for beating level one. Not all trophies are terrible but most of them aren't worth the cost of those wacky, wacky cheats.
They dont have anything to do with achievments, there is a game that if you use cheats you cant get achievments (Red Dead Redemption I think) so you can still have both. Developers just kind of forget.

When I first got into gaming and couldn't play games properly cheats were great. But I would often miss out on the actual game! Although I replayed AOE the other day and the campaign is ridiculously hard.

Now, I don't really care for them. Mods have replaced the only interesting cheats (such as the civilians with guns and rioting in GTA) which actually change the way the game was played. The problem is that there wasn't a great variety of cheats. So big heads was fun, nailing people to walls was fun, anti gravity was fun, God mode was fun but I've done them now and I don't really need to do them again.

However, cheats that made the game harder would be fun. Actually they should just put the ability to seriously edit the game once you've finished it. One shot kills from the enemy, 10x as many enemies, the entire game is at night, limited ammo pickups, that kinda thing. It would seriously give games some replay value. Although the extremely hard modes basically do that now anyway.

Not to be snarky, but it's hard to claim to respect someone's opinion after calling them a "sissy"...
