I need to find a really good one, preferably an RPG of some sort. And for when somebody brings it up, I tried WoW; it was kinda "meh" for me...Any ideas?

Edit: I can't play any that you have to pay for, either. Otherwise, I'll have to give up a lot of things, ie my home and such. >_>

Since i played Phantasy Star Universe, everything else seems like a WoW clone...

now i havent played WoW in ages, i dont really have anything against it... and id say, its better than all its clones.

so, PSU or nothing, imo... and PSU really sucks.

Well World of Warcraft is probably as good as they get. If I were you I'd hold out until a really different kind of MMORPG that actually looks good (I.E fallout online) because if you don't like WoW then you should probably steer clear of all other medieval mmos.

I'd probably say GW since its free every month and the closest that i know of to a real web RPG and since its cheap even if you dont like it it's not going to make your bankrupt

Another thing: I don't have an Xbox 360 or PS3, and my Wii's downright horrid when it comes to online. I'm rather limited...

Well World of Warcraft is the best for a reason, so there's that. Otherwise you could give EVE Online a try, or wait for The Old Republic.

I've only played 3 MMOs for any length of time.

The first was Hellgate: London. This was mostly because it didn't have subscription fees and it had its own single player mode that was supposed to be completely playable for one person (fucking lie). It was entertaining, but the story shit all over itself, and one mission towards the "end" stumped me because everything about it was designed for a team of 4-8 players, and I was playing on single-player. So naturally I tried the multiplayer, only to discover that my characters don't carry over into that mode. DAMN IT!

The second was Guild Wars. Again, this was mostly because there were no subscription fees. And while I did like the pick a few skills and hope for the best system (reminded me Magic: The Gathering), it got pretty boring pretty fast for me.

The third one (more recently) was Champions: Online. I got it mostly because I've always wanted to play City of Heroes and it follows the same payment scheme (either a monthly subscription, or only pay for the month/s you plan to play in). Character creation is nothing short of incredible, and the combat is actually pretty fun, which is weird for an MMO, but who's complaining.

Out of them all... Champions is my favorite. I.E. the only one I actually had fun with for a lasting amount of time.

P.S. Yes, I have done a free trial for WOW but I still hate it.

If you're looking for a better take on a fantasy setting, I would certainly suggest trying out Lord Of The Rings Online. You could also try Dungeons and Dragons Online or Age Of Conan. Both are free to play now and are by all accounts pretty good (though I believe their free play versions limit you with a level cap or area restriction or both).

If you're not into Fantasy at all, there's not a lot out there right now. Eve is a favourite of many who actually take the time to learn how to play it I suppose. There are a few good looking non-Fantasy MMOs coming down the pipe though (Star Wars The Old Republic and Secret World to name a couple). You could also go with Champions Online, which is a Superhero MMO that isn't as long in the tooth as the City Of games.. but I found Champions Online to be terrible and wouldn't really consider my mention of it as a recommendation.

Guild Wars is pretty good, I rather enjoyed my free trial of City of Heroes/City of Villains as well. I hear Aion is pretty cool...I've played EVE online for a few months and that game is definitely worth taking a look at. I also hear that Champions Online is really great as well, but I have absolutely no personal experience with it.

So...Yeah. You have a pretty good choice of games.

it plays exactly the same as WoW, just with more in depth character creation...

i cant see why you would like that, and not WoW... besides the community, which tbph wasnt that great on Champions either.

Kingdom of Loathing. Not a good way to sink lots of time into, but addicting none the less.

A free MMO that's fun and easy to turn back to?

Guild Wars. Get the ultimate pack, the one where you buy all the expansions.

Otherwise my vote for paying monthly goes to Champions Online and Fallen Earth. Still waiting for Guild Wars 2...

Might try DDO, if you are like me, and cant stand the crappy gameplay, its all youve got, hellgate london and tabula rasa had refreshing gameplay, but apparently having to play a real game was too fucking much, because they both died

DDO has ALOT of problems, but its worth it if you play right, its got action combat, is based on the 3.5 ruleset of pnp d&d, and there is an attempt to cut out griding by making ALL xp gaining done through instances, so monsters dont give you crap, but completing part of the story gives you xp, and each instance has like, 4 to 5 difficulty modes.

the problems being that the xp earned goes down significantly the more you play an instance, the REQUIREMENT to play in a party of a large group of people to get any decent xp, uninteresting and uninspired designs of both armor and environment, lack of paladin mounts, lack of large exploration areas, huge difficulty curves for solo and small groupings, most people pay to play, so finding groups to play the free quests on gets harder to do the higher the level, and the worse of all: paladins are nerfed to hell and back

my advice: play this game for at least a week, and no matter what class you choose, make it custom, and if you are non magic give yourself an absurd amount of strength, no matter WHAT, ALWAYS put your skill points into strength, and if you are magic, give yourself decent strength, and magic.

other option: phantasy star online blue burst, there is a free semi-official server (google the game name) but it has a low amount of players, and like monster hunter, only 4 people in a party

also be on the lookout for global agenda, a game so good its got "failure" written on its forehead

WoW is the most popular for a reason. If you didn't like that then most mmorpgs are going to feel similar.

Why mmorpgs, though? If you just have a PC, then go for PC games, like Halo and Portal.
