So I've been playing Dead Island for about 40 hours now...And I haven't had fun for about 39 of them. This isn't a troll thread, I just can't work this out, why the Hell am I still playing?

Every time I load it up, I spend half the time shouting at the television.

-The collision detection sucks, (why does a zombies arm have a longer reach than my arm holding a machete?)
-The vehicles are a complete joke
-Whenever enemies swarm you the game might aswell switch itself off because you are fucked
-Some missions are completely retarded, (why the Hell do I need to go get you Tim's Handgun when I'm already carrying three? And what's so special about the shovel you want that I can't just hand you this one?)

...but I'm still playing, and I can't figure what I am getting out of it. So I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience with this or any other games?

I've never played it but maybe you're still playing it for the same reason certain people still watch Batman & Robin: For the thrill of watching something that should have been great fail so spectacularly. I really couldn't say though because as I said, never played it and didn't really have much interest to begin with.

Why in the hell would you play a game for 40 hours if you don't enjoy it? How about you put down the broken game and find something new?

That's my whole point, I have no idea why I'm still playing it. I did the exact same thing with Fallout 3.

For some reason I just can't put it down.

Sad thing is : 20 years ago we considered such move cheesy at best. It seems that not only war never changes... :|

Yeah, I do that, sort of.

I will often continue playing a game out of sheer stubbornness. I hate leaving things unfinished, and not just games but anything at all. A game has to be truly bad or utterly boring for me to give up on it.

I recently forced myself through Knights of the Old Republic and Duke Nukem Forever, despite not enjoying them in the slightest.

Dead Island however, was bad enough for me to give up on. By the time I got to the jungle area I had had enough. Half the fights turning into shootouts with humans was the last straw.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about the gunfights, having my gun take up half the screen when I want to aim. That is sweet.

I get the feeling that's how it's gonna go when I get around to buying Duke Nukem Forever; I feel like I should play it because, I mean, it's Duke Nukem Forever, but I don't expect I'll enjoy much of it.

Feel for you, I gave up on the game the second I came to 2nd act, such a jarring shift in environment to a bland ass city pissed me off so much T.T"

I played it, beat it, and put it away. I intend to keep it around for when friends stop by, but they only really like it for killing zombies. They've not played the story and don't know how bad certain parts are so they enjoyed it. The whole experience was just so frustrating though that once I finished it I just put it down and haven't touched it since.

Was anyone else really frustrated by the ending BTW?

Could be you keep going, because it is STILL goddamn satisfying to jumpkick a crowd and watch them ragdoll, take off half of a guys head with a leadpipe.

I will concede that, for all it's faults, kicking some screaming ***** in the face after she dropped half your health then cutting her head of has to be one of gamings more cathartic moments.

Not the ending in and of itself, but the general lack of wrapping up. The zombies only really get explained once before you head off to meet the Voice, and the guy that does tell you mumbles half of it.

I wish they made it some sort of Voodoo curse or something. At least that would have been somewhat original. *looks up voodoo zombies* Nevermind. XD

I also expect a sequel, which, much like when the one for RAGE comes out, which I believe it will at some point, I won't touch with a ten foot pole.

It's like an insubstantial MMO with a four player cap. Even if you hate every second of the experience, you keep at it in the hopes that it'll eventually get better, or that all your hard work will pay off with sweet gear and an invincible character build. Except that never happens in Dead Island. Since enemies scale, and all the quests are largely the same (read: fetch quests with paltry rewards), the entire 30-60 hour experience of the game is basically one long marathon of sameyness.

The game isn't scary or engrossing through PC disempowerment (you're always as capable as your grasp on the controls allows you to be), nor is it fun and addictive through character empowerment (enemies level with you, weapons scale at the same rate and degrade, ammo is always a ***** to amass since there's such a strict cap [50 handgun rounds? Are you kidding me? Why not allow for more but make ammo difficult to acquire or manufacture? Forget it...], most skills provide little benefit, etc.). It's somewhere in between survival horror (Resident Evil), melee-based FPS (Condemned), co-op zombie FPS (L4D), and quest-based MMO (all MMOs), yet lacks any of the strengths of those genres. The game can be summed up as such: A dude on your back dangling a cookie out in front of you on a stick and string saying, "Mush, dog! Mush!" As for me, I've long since shrugged him off, and I feel I'm better off for it. Shame it took me ~60 hours to do so.

I will admit there's a very rudimentary satisfaction to be gained by jump-kicking a thug in the face, then slicing off each limb one by one while he struggles to regain his balance, etc. Except I've done that very thing maybe a hundred times by now...

Do yourself a favour and just don't buy it. You'll be saving 8 hours of your time and however much cash.

And you don't have to take just my word for it (after all, this is the internet, everything is hated by someone). That game is nigh-universally despised.

YES! They only brushed on the cause of the outbreak and then when it ends we know nothing about what will happen to the people on the island. Also I remember in the end they brought up some hacker who was supposed to be imprisoned on the island but he had never been mentioned before.
