Does anyone else miss old school RPGs?

Maybe it's just that I haven't looked hard enough, but it seems a lot of RPGs these days are completely different than the RPGs I grew up with. I have very limited skills when it comes to quick thinking and reaction, so I've always preferred turn based RPGs for that reason. I even really like strategy type games that are also turn based. But I'm finding it difficult to find new games with this same kind of battle system and I'm quickly running out of new games to play(by new I mean games I haven't played yet that are probably still old as balls).

I have found some newer games that are not turn based that ARE fun and, with practice, I have managed to learn enough to play it at least enough to beat it by the skin of my teeth. But I LONG for the old turn based battle system and I just have not found anything that I haven't already played or is actually brand new/just released. Am I alone in missing the days of turn based RPGs? Are there even any new titles that I may have missed with a turn based system? Think Final Fantasy Tactics(more strategy though), Suikoden, Legend of Legaia, Final Fantasy III, etc.

YES! Thank you! That is exactly what I'm looking for! I'll have to add that to my list of games to buy. Art style even somewhat reminds me of FF Tactics in a way. :) I have a 2DS, but I'm sure it'll play it(bought it because 3D tends to give me a headache badly).

Not really, but that's because it hasn't gone away, just moved to handhelds.

Etrian Odyssey
Persona / Shin Megami Tensei
Hyperdimension Neptunia
Bravely Default
Project X Zone
Atelier
Demon Gaze

Just to name a few big ones. Old school dungeon crawling RPGs are fairly common indie titles as well.

Picdun
Excave
Citizens of Earth
Grinsia
Class of Heroes
Dragon Fantasy

Well that could be why I haven't been able to find many titles. If they've all moved to handheld I only JUST bought myself a 2DS a couple of months ago. I've mainly been trying to find them on PS3 and Wii this whole time. I've found a FEW titles that are strategy based(mainly Disgaea) on PS3 and Wii though, but not enough to sate my appetite. These indie ones are on computer I assume? Don't do much computer gaming, so that'd be another reason I haven't had much success as well. Definitely will look into the list you gave for the handheld games. I need more ideas for games to buy for my 2ds so this helps immensely.

I don't play PC either. Everything I gave is 3DS or Vita.

Since I know what you have these are the ones on the 3DS either physically or digitally

Etrian Odyssey
Shin Megami Tensei
Bravely Default
Project X Zone
Picdun
Excave
Citizens of Earth
Grinsia

The Atelier and Neptunia series are on PS3 as well as vita but can be hard to find. If you likes Disgaea, The Guilded Fate aradox and The Awakened Fate Ultimatum are in a similar vein.

I'm kind of a dunce when it comes to downloading things(mainly because I prefer physical copies, but that can't be helped for dl only games). How much are the indie games you mentioned for the 2DS/3DS and how would I go about downloading them? I haven't attempted to download anything on it yet.

Expeditions: Conquistador. Turn-based tactical RPG (though still pretty simple and easy to get into) set during the Spanish exploration/conquest of America. You take the role of expedition leader and role-play how you want to conduct the operation. Want to be a racist, genocidal, Euro-superior warlord? You can be. Or how about someone who tries to reason with the natives and take a more diplomatic approach? You can do that to. There's lots of role-play heavy elements in the game, such as conversations with other important figures and relationship building with the soldiers of your expedition. There's a little bit of resource management and exploration as well. Combat is simple, yet still tactical enough to be engaging.

Also, the art design and soundtrack are really good too. There's not a whole lot of voice acting, but what is there is quite competent.

I had a lot of fun with it and would recommend it highly.

EDIT: Actually, here's a good, concise review of it. The dude says everything better than I can.

They're available in the eShop, just click on that orange shopping bag icon. I'm not sure if you need to make a Nintendo account (not much work and they don't ask for a lot of info), but what you do need to do is decide how you want to pay. Your two options are:
-credit card
-Nintendo eShop card

eShop cards are cards you use to fill your digital wallet and they come in various sizes (IIRC they start at ?/$15). You can buy they in most major retail chains.

The RPGs in the story start at 5 bucks or so and the most expensive ones (mostly 'big' games that also got a physical release) being around 45 bucks, but there are occasionally sales (some are quite good, with prices being reduced by 50% or even 75%).

You'll need some space on your memory card, but even the one most 2/3DS's come with can hold many of the smaller games. The system wil warn you if you don't gave enough space before buying, so unless you're not paying attention at all you won't be stuck with a game you don't have enough space for.

Thanks. :) I'll probably go with the eshop card and just stick to the ones I can't buy physically. Will have to research when sales tend to be so I can try to make my money stretch a bit. :)

Nintendo posts all sales on their websites, so all you need to do is check there once a week or so.

North America: http://www.nintendo.com/eshop/offers

(I'm not sure Nintendo of Europe has a page like that, but there many gaming websites that report on sales and new releases.)

Awesome, this is super helpful. I stopped playing games for a while due to not being able to afford it or have the time, so I'm really far behind on the times. Getting back into it I just thought turn based games had completely disappeared or something because I was having so much trouble finding them. Really appreciate people who can give me advice and help me learn the ropes for things I'm unfamiliar with due to being out of the loop for so long. It's amazing how much gaming has changed in 10 years.

There's some pretty nice stuff in there if you know where to look. For instance, Adventure Bar Story is a turn-based RPG in which you collected ingredients for cooking, cook meals and sell them at your restaurant so you can go on more expedition for rarer ingredients. It's a pretty fun game that's only $6 or so and offers over 20 hours of gameplay.

That sounds like it's up my ally too. I've been playing Rune Factory, which is like an RPG and Harvest Moon put together. Lot of cooking involved in it. Sounds similar to that but Rune Factory isn't turn based which makes battling a lot tougher for me. Definitely adding that to the list. :D

Unless I'm playing a strategy game, I've always had a preference for real-time combat rather than turn-based combat. Then again, I'm not sure if it isn't so much that I don't like turn-based games so much as the way they are often handled. I still enjoy them to some extent, though, and I always enjoy having the option to play them.

Anyways, as mentioned earlier, the 3DS (and by extension New 3DS) have a ton of old-school RPGs. The Etrian Odyssey games in particular are fantastic, and I've seen very few games work as well with some of the DS-family's specific features as well as that series does. You also may be able to find some classic RPGs on the eShop, but it has been so long since I've used that I don't know what it is like anymore.

Whoops, guess we were too focused on 3DS games ;)

DS got some great traditional JRPGs, though, and Radiant Historia certainly is one of them. I also like the Dragon Quest remakes, Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey and many more.

Oh, and Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes! Not exactly a traditional RPG with its strategic match-3 battlesystem (don't worry, it's turn-based) but great fun. Cheap, too. Easy to find in bargain bins for like $10.

I loved Dragon Quest. I think the last one I played was VIII back on PS2. Need to check to see which ones are on the systems I have.

At this point normal DS games are harder to find so I kept it modern. That game was hard enough to find 2 years ago.

But yeah, that was a good one. Also 6 Dragon Quest games (3 remakes though only 1 had been released in the US, 2 monster (like pokemon), one new), a good port of Front mission, Luminous Arc 1&2, Lufia, The best playing Final Fantasy Tactics (shame about the story) and the 3D FF4, a full port of Chrono Trigger, even a Suikoden, though few really like that one.

Good times

HUGE fan of Suikoden actually. I have all of the games except for 2(way too expensive :( ). If it's on PSV I'm definitely going to have to look into getting the PSV to play it again. Since giving my kids the old playstation 2 I haven't played any of my PS2 or PS1 games. And now for some reason I have a huge yearning to play Vandal Hearts(I think I probably played that around the time I played Suikoden the first time). So much nostalgia. Don't even get me started on Chrono Trigger.
