You see, there is this thing. It's called an opinion. Everyone has one. People are bound to have the same opinion as you, and it isn't surprising.
OT: I don't really care, I didn't mind either.
The only combat I liked was in Dirge of Cerberus, but then again I've never liked how everyone stands still, waiting for the enemy to decide which fireball they should cast.
The battles were pretty balnd and with the use of gambits you hardly had to do anything. The way I see it you could let the game finish all the battles by itself through some do-it-yourself coding. Simple battles become even more simple. And you cant rely on the gambits in hard battles.
The combat in FFXII isn't a bad thing itself, however the Gambit system allows you to effectively automate your entire battle. Some fights you could set up an impeccable Gambit (easily stolen from the internet), move into combat range with your chosen opponent/boss battle and then drop the controller for 5-75 minutes while your players killed it for you.
The Gambit system was poorly done really. Watching your guys fight a boss on their own isn't the same as actually fighting it and making strategic choices during the fight.
I personally liked both types of combat, although, admittedly, if you had your entire party automated, it was really boring. At least there's an option to turn them off

This.
Really, The battle system isn't quite as fun to me, but then agian, not having random encounters was a big bonus. All in all, its just different.
